By the end of next week, I’ll have taken off a total of 7 days in the last 22. Recognizing that there also were 6 weekend days, you can see that means only 11 working days.

Starting Up?
We began working with smaller companies almost 40 years ago. But, back then, our efforts were exclusively aimed at developing new products these companies could manufacture, market, and sell. (We also worked with much larger firms, developing new products, processes and manufacturing schema.) But, many of our smaller clients ran into problems. Not with the technical matters, but with their management and financial affairs. So, we decided to begin working with these firms to help shore up their capabilities in these areas so their great products wouldn’t wither and die because the other parts of the company were sick.
Obviously, if you are just starting out, you need to determine the legal form under which you want to operate. Should you remain a sole proprietor or partnership? Or become incorporated/form an LLC? Each has their own tax situation- some pay corporate taxes (and then you must pay taxes on the money you take out of the company), others pass along profits to you directly, and still others let you allocate profits and losses among partners. Choosing the right entity is a critical consideration.
Exercise reframe
Roy A. Ackerman, PhD, EA
We are obese. No, not just Americans, but most of the “First World” nations’ citizens. It’s not just because we eat those 942 calorie fast food sandwiches. It’s because we have become sedentary. Oh, let’s cut the crap- it’s because we’ve become lazy. We don’t exercise.
No food, no drink, just prayer and meditation
Adversity as educator?
Roy A. Ackerman, PhD, EA
Here we go, another nature vs. nurture argument. Why do we succeed? Most folks (lets keep the politicians out of this discussion and limit our considerations to facts) think this is related to our abilities, our cognitive skills. In other words, our ability to detect patterns, to perform analyses (calculations and logic), and to recognize letters and words. And, that we should practice these skills often and early. (It should be clear that we are talking about the intelligence that is manifested on IQ tests).
We Ain’t Done Yet!
No, this is not Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story”. First of all, I’m not Paul Harvey. Secondly, he is dead. But, this is a follow-up to that bizarre case, that I thought was put to bed a while ago.
Superman. Green Lantern. You.
I read a post the other day that really bothered me. Really, really bothered me. No, I won’t quote the source here, because that would only embarrass the person who posted it. This person thought she was promoting her husband in her kids’ and grandkids’ eyes by telling them he was “Superman”.
fMRI in a court of law?
As you know, lie detectors are not valid in courts of law. And, as I’ve written, “the law is not science”; we know that there are more than subtle issues at stake. Just because you didn’t lie doesn’t mean you are telling the truth. You may not know the true facts or you could just be mistaken.
A diagnostic for Autism…
Autism. ASD. As soon as you hear the words, there’s a hushed response. Or a huge outcry. First, the outbreak was claimed to be the result of inoculations. WRONG! Now, it seems that the penchant in America to ‘wait to have kids’ is taking its toll. Because the older the father, the more likely the child can be born with diseases such as autism and schizophrenia.
Don’t reach for that cold one, just yet!
There was a time when I would grab a 2 L bottle of diet coke after my swim. Of course, back then (not so long ago, about 15 years ago), that was but one of about 4 such bottles i downed a day. Plus, five- maybe six- cups (no wimpy sizes, here- 500 mL, for sure) of coffee in the morning and evening. But, now it’s just coffee and water that I imbibe.
