Gun Violence as an Epidemic?
I’ve written before how Jared Cohen of Google Ideas has been trying to discern how to stop terrorism. By determining the similarity how gangs recruit and initiate members to those methods employed by terrorists. And, given those similarities, how to stop folks from belonging to either. That’s a great idea to me.
They ain’t called smartphones for nothing!
You gotta love creative people The ones who think of things like… converting your smart phone into a 3D scanner. Just like most folks have stopped carrying cameras, since their smart phone provides the pics they need, it looks like the same may soon occur for 3D scanning. Which will be pretty convenient if you see something you want to copy. (I warned you earlier that companies’ business model are about to be upended– with copying going on, like what happened with Napster.)
A real artificial kidney?
A real artificial kidney… Come on, you know that sounds funny. But, oh, so critical. Because transplantation needs kidney donors that are compatible- and we- not just America, but the world- find kidneys in short supply, and compatibility an even tougher hurdle.
Thoughts for Today…
OK. Truth or Dare…. Don’t you wake up sometimes, in the middle of the night, scared s…less that someone is going to find out you’re a fake, that you’re not that perfect leader, the one with all the answers, the one who will lead the troops to the promised land?
A ‘chip’ off the old block?
Well, here’s another chapter in the sci v. scifi book. I wrote about Organovo and its artificial liver – not to replace a human’s organ, but to test various therapies and drugs. Now, here’s another researcher’s take on that issue.
Innovation
I was going to write a completely different blog. No, it probably would have covered a lot of the same material- but the tone would have been different. Very different.
3D Update, Part 5…
You know, I spent all this week (so far) talking about 3D printing and its effect on industry and general business. Today, I will focus in on what this one development has and will bring to health care.
3D Update, Part 4
One of the first projects with which I was involved when I moved to Michigan in the early 70s was a water recycling system for the home. (Don’t worry- this had relevance to 3D printing, I promise!) We added a very powerful ultraviolet light (UV) light to disinfect the water. From that UV technology, the ability to “cure” ink on silver aluminum cans was derived. Which greatly increased the demand for – and technology around- UV curing.
A 3D Update, Part 3
So, what do we know, so far. (Remember- this series started on Monday- with a sneak preview last Wednesday!) 3D printing apps are now available on all new PC’s, since there’s an app that is part of Windows 8. 3D printers that work with the app are out, and even more are coming. And, now, we can bet that file-sharing (or file selling) programs will let us obtain the designs we want to print for ourselves.
