Sometimes, it’s just nice to kick back and reminisce. Which is why my Shabat (Friday night) dinners are so important to me. Because that’s the one time each week that my friends (and, when they were younger- and around- my children’s friends) come over for dinner, spending hours discussing past events, politics, science, technology… all the things in life that matter.

Autism. News but no real news.
I haven’t written about autism lately. Mostly because there has not been any new research I considered worth sharing with you. But, many of my friends all know that we could easily have been among those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Because there’s a fine line between high functioning ASD subjects and those of us who managed, through some means or another, to find a way to be who we are and not be so diagnosed.

Sea Power
Two years ago, I wrote about innovative processes to harness the power from the sea. Something we all should be doing. Siemens has convinced Ireland to use tidal currents- and Alstom is trying the same approach. Since China has more than 10,000 miles of coastline, it’s not surprising that it’s joining the fray, too.

Anti-antibiotics?
Well, it IS happening. Big pharma is agreeing to withhold antibiotics from agribusinesses. To be honest, I am pretty surprised. Because, as I wrote some time ago, I thought the FDA’s voluntary request would fall on deaf ears. But, it seems that there will be fewer antibiotics fed to animals. (Notice, I did NOT say NONE.)

Alma Mater Matters
What’s the value of a specific school education? I’ve talked about the elite (public) New York City high schools . But, many of the kids who go to those schools are not much different from the kids who went to Brooklyn Poly with me. They (and I) arose from the lower middle class; nowadays, this means they probably may lack a home computer or a home internet connection, both of which are the benefits that accrue when one is from the middle or upper classes. And, that doesn’t even include the ability to go to the college of their choice- where the price of tuition may be just one reach too far.

Boy, did we have high hopes. Back in late 2010, I reported on this great new premise that would let us treat recalcitrant hypertension relatively easily. Ardian had developed a system that would enervate the renal nerve, which is the primary regulator of blood pressure in the human body (the system is called Symplicity).
