I apologize for some of the complexity that will be present in today’s blog. But, I have been using these terms for decades, and they are critical to understand the principles. I will try to explain them so you can see the issues.

Time Machine?
I read an interesting article the other day that was directed at improving the gross revenue of lawyers. (You DO know I serve as the CFO for a variety of different entities, right?)
Car mania?
It’s been widely reported that Fiat Chrysler finally had to admit that their cars could be hacked. Which should surprise no one. I’ve reported the same could be done with pacemakers. And, I also discussed that the same gateway that makes cars vulnerable can be exploited on airplanes.
Who owns your car’s brain?
Years ago, I was active in the “speed” community. No, I am not talking about the fact that I had (have?) a lead foot. I raced cars. We modified the computer chips in car engines to augment the horsepower and performance they yielded. One of the improvements actually increased the horsepower of Porsches by more than 100 HP!
If a tree grows in Brooklyn?
Don’t get me wrong. I love parks. When my kids were young, we walked (or, occasionally drove) to them to enjoy the gorgeous views, the trees, the grass (and, sometimes the play equipment). I still ride my bike along the Potomac River, the C&O Canal, the O&D Trail enjoying the view as I hustle along.
2 liters…
Decades ago, I became involved with a few water treatment companies. (These firms were actually venturing into water reuse and industrial water needs; they also asked us to help them with their entire business efforts.) It was an eye opener when we saw their water supply business. This was long before it was normal to see those 5 gallon jugs in our offices and home, proffering cold (and hot) drinking water for our needs.
Art Collection- mania or beauty seeking?
Yesterday, I spoke about my art work- but mostly the choices of picking out a frame and mat. Of course, that also meant the price for those accoutrements.
You’ve been framed!
Innovation Practicalities
One of the things I learned at MIT was how universities can increase their ability to provide scholarships and maintain their educational excellence. It wasn’t from the conventional academic process. No, these funds didn’t come from government grants for research. Because even back then, there wasn’t much (or any) excess in the funding that was provided by NIH, DOD, NSF, and the variety of alphabet agencies that support our educational research programs.
Pain and Suffering?
Two of the scariest words in our language when combined? Autoimmune disease. My grandfather died of Parkinson’s disease- one sort of autoimmune disease. My father succumbed to three different autoimmune diseases- all simultaneously attacking his own body. My mom died of autoimmune disease of no known etiology. I probably have an autoimmune disorder already. My former partner has an autoimmune disease. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that I want to know more about these diseases.
