When you need a pill or a shot

I have railed repeatedly against folks taking vitamin supplements. Because they generally don’t provide the vitamins the way the body needs them. The exceptions that actually make sense?  Vitamin D when folks live in the northern climes and Vitamin B12 for those who are pregnant and a few other cases.

Your number has been disconnected or is not in service

Last week, I got up and began my normal routine. Brushed my teeth, washed my face, and meandered over to the computer I use to review my blog posts one last time before I post them. Read a few blogs from others and help them garner some notoriety (via twitter and Google plus). Except…

We’ve come a long way since Darpanet.

I have been saving up this subject for a while. Because I wanted to be able to provide it a unique spin. Unfortunately, the spin is not really the one I was hoping to provide, but it needs to be discussed.  But, first, some introduction.

Walks like a duck. Talks like a duck…

NOTE:  I have had enough.  I must speak out.  NOW.

I have written before about my experiences as a  child and young adult.  (I also spoke about groups spewing hatred.  Also here.) Where, despite living in Metropolitan New York, my neighborhood was 99.9% Catholic, Irish and Italian.  And most of the kids went to Catholic school, where they were taught that the Jews killed Christ.  And,  my brother and I were explicitly taught that we were going to be the targets of their vengeance.

Lessons from Jonah.

Welcome to 5777. That’s the year, according to Jewish Tradition.  We’ve just finished Sukot, one of the 3 Festivals delineated in the Tora (the others are Pesach [Passover] and Shvuot [Pentecost]),  a time of joy and celebration. The past two holidays of this month were called Yamim Noraim, Days of Awe (Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipur)- in other words, they were holy days and not holidays.

The last time- until April 10th

Tomorrow night is the 7th day of Sukot.  It’s called Hoshana Raba.  Kind of like a mini-Yom Kipur.  During services, we destroy the willow branches that are part of the Lulav and Etrog (see the picture below) we’ve employed during this holiday.  We either do this because it was part of the rain bringing rituals that existed centuries ago- or to remind us of repentance.  (The origin of the practice is simply not clear to us today.)

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA)

No Gravatar

A few years ago, a slew of my clients rolled over their IRA’s into Roth IRA’s. Because there was a tremendous tax benefit to doing so- and the IRS provided a short period to make these non-taxable conversions. (NO! The conversions really aren’t non-taxable; but the IRS provided a window when you could make them without paying taxes. That is no longer the case.)

Are you kidding me?

Yes, it’s another holiday.  Among my favorites.   For the past two days, I’ve been cleaning my backyard, moving all the furniture around, and building a hut.   Because Sunday night starts Sukot- the full moon holiday of Tishrei. (By the way- don’t miss the Orionid meteor showers on Saturday night/Sunday morning.)  After finishing our 40 days of introspection, which culminated in the most solemn, full day of fasting for Yom Kipur, we now have the holiday of joy.  (Sukot has another name- the Time of Celebration.)  Sukot is one of the three “festivals” delineated in the Tora, the Bible.
