The Feast of Weeks

48, 49, 50!

I already told you about L’ag B’Omer, the 33rd day between Pesach (Passover) and Sh’vuot.  Tomorrow, will be the 50th day of that counting period.   50 days after we were freed from Egypt (Mitzrayim- a place of narrow straits), we were waiting by Mount Sinai (sorry- NOT in the “Sinai Peninsula”, more likely in Saudi Arabia, near an active volcano), to receive the 10 Commandments. Where the words were seen- yes, seen. I admit, until I saw the effects of a rocket plant explosion in Henderson, Nevada, I had no idea you really could see “sound”.  Not surprising that those in attendance were totally awed…

6 AM on the 6th, under a full moon

It was 75 years ago. And because of that, so many young children don’t have a clue what today is.

D-Day. The day the Allies launched a full-scale invasion of the European mainland; the first rung in the eradication of Adolph Hitler and his stranglehold on freedom and his promotion of anti-Semitism.  (Do not for a moment think that the Allied forces did any war planning or actions to terminate the Holocaust, though.  Because they didn’t!)

Memorial Day, 2019

No Gravatar

Here we go again.  Another holiday moved around so we could get a 3 day weekend.

I grew up hearing my grandfather call this holiday “Decoration Day”. But, it wasn’t today.  The 30th of May is its proper date.  Not the “If it’s Monday, we need a holiday” version we employ nowadays.  (Today is the 27th of May.)

Anti-Otherism

Given that yesterday was Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, it’s probably a good time to talk about anti-Semitism, and its new masquerade- Anti-Zionism.  (You do realize that Anti-Semitism is the oldest anti-otherism among our civilizations.)  Especially, since the murder by the American terrorist in Poway has faded from memory somewhat.

Tonight, tonight…

So, this year was a leap year (for those who follow the Jewish calendar).  As you should know, we Jews use the new moons as the signal for a new month.   And, since it is critical that holidays stay linked to certain seasons, we need a leap year.  Three times every 11 years.  And, the leap year means we add an additional month to our calendar.  No, it doesn’t have yet another name- instead we call this “leap month” the same name as the month that precedes it, but note it’s # 2.  Rosh chodesh (the new moon) of Adar 2 was two weeks ago..

By George!

I bet you wonder why I didn’t add anything special to my blog this past Monday.  After all, that was the day that America celebrated “President’s Day”.   Having killed the holiday celebrating Abraham Lincoln (12th of February) and today (George Washington’s birthday) to combine them for one.
