One dot.

A few drops of ink changes the world.  I know it seems hard, but if you think about it, you will see.  Having just finished a month laden with holidays, it’s easy to use biblical references first.

dot

Haman (the Book of Esther) wanted to eradicate his enemy, Mordechai and the Jews.  Oh, he used money.  He bribed King Achashverush to put his mark on the decree to eradicate all the Jews in the (Persian) Empire on the full moon of Adar.  One dot is all it was going to take.  But Mordechai and Esther used love or sex (or both) to have yet another “dot” reverse the decree, by affording the Jews to kill all those who kill them on the day before. A lot of mayhem for two dots.

A dot of blood on the doorpost is all it took to have the Supreme Being pass over the houses of Jews, as the first born in the land of Egypt (man, woman, child, beast) were decimated.  (I also presume it was the dot of the signet ring of Pharaoh that afforded the Jews permission to vacate the land.)

It was just a dot on the document produced at Wannsee that sealed the torture and killing of 6 million Jews in Europe.   Even Hitler had deniability since it was Richard Heydrich’s signature and Adolph Eichmann’s plans that were employed.

It was just a dot that converted Crimea from being part of the Ukraine to being part of Russia. A place where confusion now reigns.  (It should be reported by now in the New York Times, among other newspapers.)   Because the dot didn’t change the whole situation overnight.  But, it got it started.

Just like the dot Lyndon Baines Johnson afforded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that made America a different country.  And, like Crimea, things didn’t change overnight.  It still took work, but it was just a dot that made the difference.

It’s up to us to put our marks on this world.  One dot among many other actions makes that difference.

  1. Have you seen the movie Noah yet? It was an interesting take on the story, quite apart from a couple aspects that I am sure I did not read in the scriptures.
