How’s YOUR vision?

So, there I sat.  In this cavernous room.  Recently painted, an exquisitely curtained ark, with the rest of the room unadorned.  And, I notice each congregant.  Their clothes, their demeanor.  Who’s dressed to the nines, who’s not.  Crystal clear.

Actually clearer than I’ve seen these things before.  Because I finally relented and went to my optometrist to get a new pair of contacts.  I’ve been delaying it, because my contact lenses- the brand I’ve worn for 32 years- have been discontinued.  They worked fine- they let me see the highway for about 400 feet, no haloes at night, and didn’t bother my eyes.  I could still read about 1200- 1500 words per minute (with corrective reading glasses on top of my “contacted” eyes).   Everything’s perfect.

But, it wasn’t.  These new lenses let me see just a little crisper.  Just a little clearer.  Things I didn’t see last week at shul I can see clearly and explicitly now.

This is exactly how we all operate in our business affairs.  Oh, things are going along fine.  We are churning out services and products.  Our employees seem happy and productive.  But, unless we improve our vision, our focus, just a little- we miss things.

Ensure that 2012 will be Great!

We miss that there is a more creative way we can supply that widget, offer that service.  One that a potential competitor may be preparing to offer- or already is!  And, is picking up customers/clients to who we fail to convert.

We miss the fact that our employees are satisfied.  They are giving us their eight hours of effort.  They may even be giving us nine or ten hours. when things get bolloxed up.  But, they are not examining their work to see ways to do it better, add that little something ‘extra’ that converts the ‘ordinary’ to the ‘extraordinary’.

Take the time to examine what you are doing just fine- differently.  Open up new vistas of opportunity.   See what new heights you really can reach.  Dare to make 2012 great!

  1. Roy, I love your analogy. I too wear glasses/contacts and am not too bad without them. However, with them on I can see so much more clearly, and as you say didn’t know what I was missing.

  2. You’re so right, Roy. It’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities that we forget to see everything clearly. Of course the most obvious ideas are right in front of us…too close for us to see. But making a conscious effort to see the world around us can make a huge difference in our lives.

  3. Hey oy,

You have changed my vision for a lot of things and you have always made it a great posts with each and every post. Not only did every post of yours enlighten our minds, but also our vision!

It is how we look at things that matters at the end, what you make of what you have and how you use it for the better!

    Thanks! 🙂

  4. I could say that if you need help with your business vision talk to Roy or myself but I think I will just suggest that people review what they seem, think and believe as regularly as they check their smoke detectors rather than their eyes

  5. Hey Roy!!

I admire with your post its true that the people we admire all have a vision – to be the best, to make a difference, to inspire people or to create things that can change the world.

  6. Love this post Roy. Maybe that’s my problem, not updating my contacts, except that I don’t wear them.

It must be my other vision of sorts. You know, the vision of success without the results. So this year, in 2012, I vow to make it a great year by seeing my business in a very different way. Thanks for the reminder.

  7. I SEE your point clearly Roy! lol, but seriously that is so true. When things are comfortable and you see your business churning around you, there is always something you can ‘dare to do’ or improve on. Thank you for your wonderful analogy and reminder …. by the way, I do have an eye doctor appointment on Monday. I need new contact lenses too!
