Back when I was registering folks to vote, it was a lonely task. Oh, sure, there were two or three of us meeting up with folks, convincing them it was a valuable thing for them to register to vote. But, we were outsiders.
How I came to be sensitive to bias
I wrote yesterday’s blog- and the one that should have appeared today a while ago (which will appear tomorrow). But, I realized I need to explain to you how I came to be sensitive to bias. So, I am interrupting the flow to insert an article I was asked to write by Janine Ripper almost a decade ago, for a series that she shared on her (then) blog- The Beauty of Difference.
Inflection Point
I wasn’t going to intervene in my queue. But, I’ve been reading notes (complaints) by many an acquaintance, who quote folks who routinely spew words of hate in seemingly socially acceptable ways. Or, by Black folks whose “public benefit” groups are sponsored by the Koch Brothers.
#Racism
The history of the Commonwealth of Virginia is not going away. It’s racist past has now become the topic of manifold conversations, like the way the #MeToo moments became the most discussed issue a few months ago.
Running amok?
You have to be carefully taught. Being given a green light makes the situation worse.
What am i talking about? Racism. Nazism. Fascism. And, I know a bunch of you are going to switch sites now, because you hate being preached to. Because you want to keep onto your hate.

I have written before about my experiences as a child and young adult. (I also spoke about groups spewing hatred. Also here.) Where, despite living in Metropolitan New York, my neighborhood was 99.9% Catholic, Irish and Italian. And most of the kids went to Catholic school, where they were taught that the Jews killed Christ. And, my brother and I were explicitly taught that we were going to be the targets of their vengeance.
