We all crave creativity. No, I don’t mean we all want to be artists, writers, or song composers. Although, I am pretty sure those choices sound “cool”.

Now you see it!
Guess what. It may be time to throw out all our anatomy and physiology textbooks. You know, the ones we used in Med school, the ones I used to teach the next generation of health professionals at schools across this great nation. Because there’s been a new discovery- one that will affect how we think about the brain for a long time in the future.
Brain Augmentation?
We all know that learning a language is much easier when we are younger. Learning two languages (one would be your native one) means it will be much easier to learn a third or even a fourth (regardless if they are or are not related to one another).
Art Appreciation
I’ve written about meta-analyses before. In particular, it’s an interesting method to examine medical data from diverse studies. It’s not something new. (It’s been around for almost 1000 years, clearly using the existent statistics.) The trick is that you need large studies to be linking together, or the results get to be too limited in value.
Art and Brain…
I’ve written many times about my art collection. I’m sure there are pieces I have you’d want in your home or office, but others you would simply detest. That’s the point about art- it’s an individual appreciation activity.
Born? Made?
So, it turns out that at least some of us are turned out to help others. fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) is being used to prove that fact. But, the goal of most of the studies has not been to see if we are generous to a fault, but to determine how (if?) we can help folks who lack empathy or want to improve on their generosity.
Water- for our diet and our brains!
You know the rule- drink 8 glasses of water a day. (OK, I admit it- I drink that much fluid- and then some- but NOT pure water, since I need some flavor to handle the volume.)
PTSD Treatment Progress
PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) has been a real issue for Americans. Of course, when you put folks in countries where other folks use booby traps and small bombs to terrorize the population, it’s not surprising that PTSD becomes an issue.
Migraines
My business partner for years has suffered from migraines. From that situation alone, I could attest to the debilitating effects of the malady. The fact that 10% of Americans (some 36 million people) also suffer means that many, many days of productive life are affected. And, most of those folks- and more importantly- most of everyone else has the wrong impressions about migraine.
Free Will… or Free Won’t?
It’s the advent of Elul (which means “searching” in Aramaic; it’s an acronym in Hebrew for “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine”), the last month of the year (in my calendar), which begins the two month period of accounting and preparation. [Ed: This was written a few weeks ago.] It’s the end of our spiritual new year. This means it’s time to reflect on the year, what I plan to do next year, and to make amends should I have offended some… Which means we need to consider whether or not this was all fore-ordained; in other words, is there free will or not?
