Drink up! (Water, that is)
With all the meds I am on, it is not unusual for my doctor to admonish me for not drinking enough water. (They all require me to be hydrated for their optimal performance.) Generally, I drink about 3 or 4 liters a day- but I also add flavoring to some of the water, since I find it boring to drink plain water. (No fizz, just flavoring. Fizz can negate the benefits of water for hydration.)
Susan Solomon, A Stem Cell Pioneer
Susan Solomon, the co-founder (right at her kitchen in 2005 with Mary Elizabeth Bunzel) and long time CEO of the New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF), just succumbed to cancer. She first became a health care advocate in 1992, when her son, Ben Goldberger, was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes, at the age of 9. Soon after her mother’s death from cancer in 2004 and a political decision by the US Government, she knew that stem cell research was the best hope for her son’s condition and for folks like her mom with cancer. That’s what led to the founding of NYSCF.
What Comes After COVID
Yan Xie and Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly (the latter is the Director of Research, VA St. Louis Health Care System) combed through the Veteran’s Affairs national database, examining the records of some 181, 280 participants who developed COVID-19 between 1 March and 30 September 2021, and survived at least 30 days of the illness. These were compared to two control groups- 4,118,441 during the same time frame and a similar one (4,286,911 from 1 March 2018 and 30 September 2018) that manifested no evidence of COVID-19. None of the participants had diabetes before inclusion in the cohorts.
Found ya, didn’t I?
I admit this new invention may interest me way more than you.
After all, once I developed Klebsiella of the calf, and it transmogrified into necrotizing fasciitis, infectious wounds became more than an academic interest to me.
Weight Loss Drugs
I am sure you’ve seen those commercials. At least two different, competing drugs. Each proclaiming how great they are for Type II diabetics, lowering their A1C, and… wait for it- helping them lose 7 to 12 pounds.
Kidneys for Life
I bet you didn’t know that you could lose 90% of your kidney function without a clue. So, maintaining your kidney health is pretty critical. Two conditions that can make that problematic are high blood pressure and diabetes. But, there are eight conditions we should monitor to ensure proper kidney health.
New hope for blood vessels?
Given the prevalence of diabetes, it’s not surprising that we have to consider replacing damaged blood vessels.
Helen Murray Free
Helen Murray Free passed away (complications of a stroke) recently. Someone we should remember- even if her invention has been passed by time.
