Operator, Operator…

So, you all do know that this year the number of traffic accidents and fatalities has increased- for the first time in a long time.  (35,200- a 7.7% increase over 2014- despite the fact that cars are getting safer.)  It shouldn’t come as a surprise, because with the precipitous drop in the price of gas, we are driving more.  And, as any cogent being realizes as they traverse this great land, too many folks should not have a driver’s license (maybe they don’t- but are behind the wheel anyway). At the very least, many (most?)  should be barred from getting behind the wheels of the ridiculous large vehicles they own, since they can’t handle them properly at all.

Driving Miss Daisy? (And, Tom, Bob, Lisa, too!)

You know if you are of a certain age, you can probably recall the pent-up emotion and elation you had on your 16th or 17th birthday.  Back when it was my turnfor this, it wasn’t perfect-  impossible to get a drink until you were 18.  (Nowadays, we think making folks wait- that’s really read as purchase illegally- until their 21st birthday is reachedto sit at a bar.)

Unsafe at any speed?

Cars (as practical transportation) have been around for a century now. And, since the 1960’s, we have been working to make our cars safer for us to drive. Of course, some vendors are less than reputable (Volkswagen and Takata Airbags come to mind), but generally our cars have been loaded with safety features- like air bags, non-skid brakes, etc.

Driving while teen

I’ve been driving a car for more than 45 years now.  Or, to quote my driver ed instructor, with the ONE piece of information he provided me, I’ve been operating a vehicle for more than 45 years now.  His exact statement was, “I am only able to teach you how to operate a vehicle.  After you master that, you will finally be able to drive one.”   Which is why he followed me home often, making me walk several miles to double back and retrieve my car.  Because he knew that I was driving a car- and clearly had been doing so for a long time before I took his driver ed course.
