I remember when candidate Ronald Reagan would prance about asking “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” It was his effective mantra to become the US President.

Disruptive Technology- real or imagined?
We all have heard it. Beware the disruptive technology that will change the way things happen in this world. But, having developed more than my share of new innovations, I can guarantee you that the world does NOT beat down the doors of those with better mousetraps.
Is there a STEM shortage?
So, here we go again. The economy seems to be looking better- maybe. The government reported that overall hiring is increasing in the US.
A rose is a rose is a rose…
There’s been a whole lot of hoopla about a CBO (Congressional Budget Office) report. The one that announced that 2.3 million Americans might opt to stop working over the next ten years. Because PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act- aka Obamacare) has given then something these folks didn’t have before.
Living Wages. The Very Bottom Line.
Here in the DC area, we are about to engage in a new kind of experiment. The minimum wage in the Maryland suburbs is going up to $ 11.50 an hour. As it will be in the city of DC. But, in Northern Virginia, the minimum wage will be the Federally mandated one of $7.25. Do you really think the jobs will leave the northern suburbs and move to Virginia?
Our Economy Needs Entrepreneurs
OK. Here I go again. I’m going to tick off a few of you with my discussion of small business.. The facts are that our government has no clue that not all “small” business are the same, nor do they understand that lifestyle businesses are not really small businesses. Yet, they produce economic policies assuming the contrary. And, because of that our national economy suffers.
It’s a new gig. How do you approach it?
If you are going to be working with a client for the first time, there are all sorts of issues that need to be addressed. Since we typically serve as CXO (Chief Executive Officers, Chief Operating Officers, Chief Financial Officers, Chief Research Officers), we understand these concerns. Which includes the near abject terror a client may experience putting his baby in our hands. (Even if you are not serving as CXO, they are entrusting you to achieve some success on a part – or all- of the project that they themselves can’t effect [which is why they hired you.]) It is our job- and yours- to help allay such fears.
Small Business Says?
It was Small Business Week last week. You know, everyone says how much they value small business in an election year- and does nothing about it. Depending upon how you define small business (a company that employs- with a payroll- one or more people OR include Mary or Tom working 2 hours a month on the side, with a full time job or mommyhood [or daddyhood] taking up most of the time), most small businesses are not incorporated and pay their taxes as part of an individual’s tax return. So, tax rates for corporations have no impact on their bottom line. (Another large segment of “small” business are pass-through entities, which have their profits taxed on an individual’s tax returns, too.) But, that’s not the subject of this post, either.
