Labor Day 2023

Labor Day- that is the  first Monday in September.

Labor Day used to signify that school was about to start- tomorrow!  But, that calendar is no longer in vogue.  Some schools started last week and some even began two weeks ago. Others won’t start for yet a few more days.   But, it still is the harbinger of summer’s end for most of us.  (Yes, I know that Autumn begins on 23 September [it used to be on 21 September], but the pools close today…)

Labor Day

It’s the first Monday in September. That means it’s Labor Day.  The very first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City way bay in  1882.  At least for now, it’s still a national holiday.  I don’t hold up a great deal of faith we will continue to celebrate it, since business and the GOP party have been working hard to eliminate union labor at every turn.

First Monday in September

I can’t believe it’s already the first Monday in September. Which means that today is Labor Day.  And, since 1882, when folks first celebrated the event in New York City, it has grown to become a national holiday. (No- New York State was not the first state to make it a holiday; they dawdled passing the bill,  which gave Oregon the shot at earning the honor.)

Another holiday? Yup!

Today is another holiday.  This one is really a festival.  One we get to celebrate without being in synagogue all day.  But by the end of next week, I’ll have taken off a total of  6 whole days (Yom Kipur was on a Saturday) and three half days for the Jewish Holidays in September- plus the secular Labor Day.  Recognizing that there also were 9 weekend days, you can see that means only 12 working days this whole month .
