There are some special characteristics that leaders possess, things we can’t always see in their pedigree. But, we see them clearly when we watch them interact with others.

No water. No food.
Today is the last day of July. Tonight is also the 9th day of Av. The end of this Hebrew month is the day my mother died and the day my oldest daughter was born. An auspicious moment.
Communication
Communication. It’s not just words. It’s facial expression. It’s our stance. It’s our tone.

A new moon. That means there really is NO moon. On a moonless night, we can see all the stars (assuming it’s not going to be stormy or cloudy tonight- which now that I am proofing this today- is, indeed, going to be the case). And, in my religion, it’s the advent of a new month.

Our countries, companies, our schools, our organizations are all hierarchical. Yes, there is someone in charge. Hopefully, the persons in charge are dedicated leaders. Sometimes they are not. And, those associated with such entities suffer.
Thoughts for Today…
OK. Truth or Dare…. Don’t you wake up sometimes, in the middle of the night, scared s…less that someone is going to find out you’re a fake, that you’re not that perfect leader, the one with all the answers, the one who will lead the troops to the promised land?
When the Founder goes…
While we were surprised at the timing (or at least the announcement), it’s pretty clear that Microsoft knew Steve Ballmer was going to be retiring soon. Not necessarily in the next 12 months, as was announced, but certainly within the next three years, after his youngest child began college. Because he said that several times.

OK. You started your company. Does that make you the leader? The answer is maybe- because a leader must be able to inspire his/her stakeholders to achieve. Not only that- but, as you grow your organization, you have to find and train other leaders to help accomplish your mission.

Com-mu-ni-ca-tion (a useful definition)
Leadership requires someone who can lead- and at least one person who can follow. It does not require exhortation. It requires someone with a vision, a goal, and a direction- and the ability to communicate that vision so that others feel compelled to join in the quest.
