Health Care Considerations

So….

How many of you realize that President Biden has managed to fulfill the dream of the Affordable Care Act?   To make it possible for almost every American to obtain health insurance at a reasonable cost.  It is the culmination of the original plan.

Medicaid Expansion

So, when the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed, it had a Medicaid component.  It was left to the states to add that component as a benefit to their residents; if chosen, it would alter the way Medicaid reimbursement worked in that state.

Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, and the Pandemic Emergency

We’ve spoken how the Inflation Reduction Act (sic) includes many provisions that were started when the pandemic hit; in this case, an increased subsidy for those signing up for the Affordable Care Act.  Had the Inflation Reduction Act not been passed, those folks would have seen a tremendous increase in the costs of their health insurance.  And, with the public health emergency declaration, the ability to enroll in Medicaid was enhanced (and now continued)- so much so that 88 million folks are so enrolled (a 17% increase since the start of the pandemic in February 2020).

Through the roof?

When will it stop?

Yes, we all know that we have inflation- mostly due to weather related issues blocking our supply chains.  But, health care costs (yet again) jumped almost 10% last year.  (That’s more than double the previous year’s increase  of “only” 4.3%; one of the lowest in a while.)  This one, though, is the highest increase is 2 decades!  Coupling that with our modest drop in GDP (gross domestic product) means healthcare glommed some 20% (compared to 17.6%) of the economy last year.

What Hath Obamacare Wrought?

I know, I know, I’m old.

Back when I was considering colleges, this place was called Drexel Tech. Even when I applied to grad/med schools, that’s what it was.
Now, it’s Drexel University- a hop, skip, and jump away from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  (Right next door to Union Station- the grand railroad depot- in Philly, too!)  And, it even houses a medical school- and a school of public health now!

Vindictive Policies

I knew the decision to impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients was clearly to terminate their ability to get help- even though they really deserved it.  After all, the GOP believes that these folks are all sucking at the government tit, getting wealthy doing nothing. (As if.)  Even though the data demonstrate that most of these recipients can’t work for a variety of reasons.

Shh. Secret Discrimination

I wasn’t going to continue this, but I was having a discussion with my normal coffee buds and this issue came up. And, several folks asserted facts that were plainly untrue. Quoting that Fox News said so. (It turns out that Fox News actually has NEWS programs- and their reporting is pretty darned good. But, the shows- you know, the ones with abrasive personalities at night or blond(e) bimbos [the e is in parentheses to denote either gender] in the morning, the ones that air about 22 hours a day- are NOT news. But, they want you to think they are.)

Is Kentucky Really Leading the Way?

No Gravatar

I am sure you’ve all heard that Kentucky was granted permission to require Medicaid recipients to get a job.  I am even sure many of you think this is a fine idea.  After all, why should an able-bodied person get to flounder at home and use our tax dollars to garner a benefit.

If our Pols weren’t liars, this would be bipartisan.

Let’s consider a few claims made by both parties.

They believe in Capitalism, but not Crony Capitalism.  Except they we protect firms with special rules to preclude their failure. They encourage these firms  to line their pockets (oh, wait- they call them political contributions) so they write special tax provisions to give them unfair advantages.
