Having been subjected to needles routinely from the time I was a tyke, I developed a pathological hatred to being injected. After all, it would not be atypical for me to have been subjected to 150 injections in any given year, until I turned 12.

It was six months ago when I first mentioned a change in one of the MOOC (massive open online course) programs out there. The one started by MIT and Harvard that became edX. It had survived for nine years, adding courses from a slew of other prestigious institutions, with some 40 million registered users around the world.

We have two kidneys. And, these two bean-shaped organs maintain some vital functions for us every day of our lives. Sure, we recognize that they produce the urine that we excrete- the urine that contains body wastes. They also purify the blood as it circuits from the heart to the rest of the body.
Pulling it out from thin air?
Two years ago, I reported on a really cool device developed by Dr. Omar Yaghi. One that is able to produce pure water right from the air. (OK. It does require that there be humidity- water vapor- in the air. We are not talking about producing something from nothing.)
The Age of Living Machines
So, last month, I had the opportunity to visit the House of Sweden (the building that houses the Swedish Embassy in the Georgetown section of Washington, DC). It’s a stunning building with vistas of the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, the Kennedy Center, the infamous Watergate Hotel and Residences, Rosslyn (VA), and Roosevelt Island.

When I first heard about Solve, I thought the notice was from MIT. After all, this was a term MIT had bandied about for a long time.

George Hatsopoulous was never a ChemE- but he did hail from MIT. Where he earned his degrees in mechanical engineering. And, he did start a most interesting company- as a spin-off from MIT- the Thermo Electron Corporation.
