It’s been about a decade since I last discussed risk. Given the pandemic and how folks are reacting to it, it’s clear that this is the time we need to have another review of what risk does or does not entail. (The problem is that too many folks impose their political beliefs on situations- so the risk (or non-risk) of a given path is often lost in the weeds.)
A dozen years ago, Vioxx was given the axe. This pain medicine, developed by Merck, was considered to be a menace. Because the risk of heart attacks were much higher than expected.
Yesterday, I explained how captive insurance companies are supposed to work. They serve as a means to minimize the risk, but don’t leave policyholders without any recourse- or, in the case of our firms, any potentially harmed folks without any chance to recover damages. Today, I will explain how this process is being subverted- these captives are being formed to rip off the public.
Captive insurance company. Sounds pretty cool. And, back in the 80’s, it was a critical juncture for us. We were a small provider of medical products. And, our product liability insurance was running 3% of sales- and growing fast.
Most people know that extreme vitamin D deficiency causes rickets (softening of bones, so they become distorted and bowed). Plus, even a moderate lack of vitamin D will exacerbate your risk of bone fractures. Vitamin D is not just about bones, though- with a shortage of this vitamin, we leave ourselves more susceptible to infections, at risk to autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and Sjoegren’s, and we even face the risk of developing certain cancers.
I haven’t written about autism lately. Mostly because there has not been any new research I considered worth sharing with you. But, many of my friends all know that we could easily have been among those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Because there’s a fine line between high functioning ASD subjects and those of us who managed, through some means or another, to find a way to be who we are and not be so diagnosed.
I am sure this will amaze you as much as it did I. Naproxen- the over the counter drug sold by (almost) everybody and their grandmother- is different from different vendors. Besides being sold as generic Naproxen, it is also sold under various “brand” names- Aleve, Naprelan, Naprosyn, Anaprox, Apronax.
