I’ve often written how I was bound and determined to develop concepts for dialysis since I was a tyke. OK. Maybe not a tyke in the true definition (not that it’s all that clear how old a tyke may be), but by 8 years of age.

Lets Get STEM to root early
Way back in the prehistoric age, when I was going to college, there were very few women heading for the engineering profession. Nor were there a slew of Black folks. As a matter of fact, my engineering/science college (undergraduate) had about 5 women enrollees. And, to the best of my knowledge there were significantly less than 3 score (there may have been 10) Black students. Out of an undergraduate population of nearly 3000.
A New Era…
First, let me reminisce. Then, I will share some fantastic news. And, then explain why it’s even more incredible than just fantastic.
Music is part of STEM?
I’ve always been a great fan of Big Band music and Jazz. So, I was only slightly surprised to hear Herbie Hancock explain the confluence of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and jazz. He strongly believes that there is an intrinsic link between building things and playing music. Which, of course, means that our schools’ idea of cutting music from the curriculum is not helping our kids with STEM education.
40 of them
Not quite the culmination- but the week of “Spring Ahead” is a major one for those who’ve been working since “Fall Back”.
STEM at Sea
Teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) to younger students is still not doing too well. Oh, we’re teaching it- but the kids aren’t really learning it as well as they should. (I’ve written about this plenty. Here’s but one example.)
The first of many
Yesterday, I set the stage. For Thanksgiving- from me to my mentors, both alive and dead. Who shared their wisdom, their time, and their love to help me become who I am. But, not by making me a square box to fit a square hole. By helping me find the best (or at least pretty darned good) way to make my way.
Is there a STEM shortage?
So, here we go again. The economy seems to be looking better- maybe. The government reported that overall hiring is increasing in the US.
Broken Bat?
Go, Phils! (I know, we are not doing well- but I still support them. With a 2+ hour drive – each way- as a season ticket holder. I even got back last night at 2 AM- and was at a meeting by 5:20 AM this morning.) I’ve been a Phanatic since I was 12. When Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game on Father’s Day. But, I’m not writing about the Phils, per se…
Some tests really go long…
When I was younger (yes, it’s true, I was younger once), I considered going to a elite school. The Bronx High School of Science. My guess is, had I gone there, I would have stayed in high school- but that is not the subject of today’s post.
