1, 2, 3, 4– exercise- get out the door

Exercise.  Our brains need itOur bodies need it.  We expect exercise to show results- with weight loss, with muscle tone- and it doesn’t always do so.  It affects our blood pressure maintenance, keeps our cholesterol balance in check, reduces the risk of stroke and cardiac disease.  It’s why we are supposed to exercise 2.5 hours over the course of a week; 60 minutes a day helps with weight loss.  (I don’t think many of you are spending an hour a day exercising.  Me, neither.) So far, I’m sure that nothing I’ve said surprises you.

Au Revoir to a Pioneer

While we were all sitting down to our Thanksgiving dinner, a pioneer passed away from the complications of an hemorrhagic stroke. Dr. Joseph E. Murray of Peter Bent Brigham (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital), who won the Nobel Prize in 1990 for developing the first living transplant, sharing the honor with Dr. E. Donnal Thomas, who pioneered bone marrow transplants (who died just one month earlier).

From dental implants to jaws…

So, here’s a big secret.  An artificial jaw was implanted in an 83 year old patient.  Not only did this operation occur a year ago in the Netherlands (June 2011), but the jaw was produced by a 3D printer. [If you want even more information about 3D printers, search for 3D in the index to the right.] The first jaw transplant in North America was performed in 2006- and in that case the patient had the donated jaw reside in his back muscles for 8 months to insure biocompatibility.
