I really hate sounding like Chicken Little. But, given the intellectual and economic prowess of our Congress (that’s both the House and the Senate), I really have no choice. (Anyone else recognize the stupidity of bringing snowballs onto the floor to lambaste those who understand the import of global climate change?)

R&D cuts mean fewer Start-ups
I am not trying to sound the Doomsday Machine. Our economy is picking up. Corporations are raising their low-end employee’s wages. (Don’t get too excited. They are not doing this for benevolent reasons. They are having a tough time keeping their low-end employees, because jobs are now more available.) But, we still are not coming out with a plethora of new products.
Just the facts, ma’am…
As I am sure you know, I am a life-long technologist. OK. Maybe only since I was six- but that’s pretty much life-long. And, I’ve been trained in the scientific method. Which means one must develop a hypothesis- and try to prove it wrong. If one can’t, it provides validity to the scenario one considered.
Farmer John is a different Cat, nowadays
Driverless cars. Actually, I’m not going to talk about them for passenger transport. But, consider what that technology can do (and already does) for agriculture.
Change 1 definition. Overnight, we create 2 million new manufacturing jobs?
Is this another case of government overreach? Or, should we consider this a valid concept? I can argue the case both ways (yes, I was on debate teams for many years)- but I really am torn over this issue. Oh, yeah, that’s right. You can’t read my mind. So, let me explain the issues.

BMore 3D
I don’t even recall where I heard about it. But, there was a new pop-up shop. One devoted to 3D printing. In Baltimore- just about 70 minutes away. I searched the web for more information and finally found the place. It was open from 1 pm to 9 pm seven days a week.
Divorce- Technology Style
I’ve written about family law before. You know- the fancy term for divorce law. I not only have experienced divorce (ok, I was one of the adults- I caused the divorce; my children experienced it), but I have served as the financial manager for a family law practice for more than a few years. This is a big business- there are about 800,000 divorces filed annually in the US (compared to the 2 million marriages begun).
Finance is NOT a dirty word
The computer made me do it?
You know it. Everyone has their own pace when it comes to assessing data- especially when we are under time pressures. Someone like me can juggle mountains of data (in my head); others need to write things down, still others need to p-r-o-c-e-s-s m—o—r—e s—l—o—w—l—y still. Obviously, we wouldn’t feel very secure if that last group are among our air traffic controllers.
Let’s stem the STEM problem
The President’s Job Council is meeting right before the start of the college year (very soon) in Portland (OR). The desire is to hear from America’s top engineering colleges to discern issues affecting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curricula. The goal (this is business, as well as political) is to get colleges and universities to produce the world’s brightest workers.
