Stem this stuff now

OK. For the past two days, we spoke about STEM.  That’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  (Here are the links to Monday’s and Friday’s posts.)  Today, we’re switching gears to a different stem- stem cell therapy.  And, we’ll stay on this topic for a day or two.  (I hope to keep you engaged, too!)

Not for polite conversation?

I’ve written about fecal transplants.  Don’t go yech.  If your colon is out of whack, then it’s one of the few avenues available to bring your system back into control.  I’ve recommended the procedure to friends, who (after their initial disdain and horror) are pleased to have taken my advice.  Because they are back to normal.

A real artificial kidney?

A real artificial kidney… Come on, you know that sounds funny.   But, oh, so critical.  Because transplantation needs kidney donors that are compatible- and we- not just America, but the world- find kidneys in short supply, and compatibility an even tougher hurdle.

Healthcare Cost Spiral

It’s hard to believe how different health care is than normal technology.  When we are dealing with computers, automobiles or other technology, things get cheaper and more efficient with time.  In health care, new innovations either make things possible- sometimes at lower costs, but just as often these developments just cost more money.  Which is why health care comprises some 20% of our GDP.
