Time Management- and Vision, Mission, and Goals

I just had the wonderful experience of having two of my three children, my son-in-law, and my fifteen month old grandson sharing a baseball game (his very first, I might add) with me.  While I love baseball (ok, maybe just the Phillies), I love my children more- much more.  And, my 15 month old grandson reminded me of something very important during that game.  Of course, as is true for every parent and grandparent,  I recognize that my grandson is very smart. He has an extensive vocabulary.  While he pointed out “ball”, “flag”, among his many other words, he saw something I forgot was actually found in center field.  “Tick Tock,” he said.  No one really knew that he knew the word for clock- but he recognized what it was.

There is tremendous irony in having time measured at a baseball game- the one game that does not use time measurements- and it hit home for me.  We, the adults of this world, desperately want to manage time.  We rush to judgment, we make snap decisions, we seek “quality” time with our children and spouses; we seek any way we can to do more in a shorter period of time.  Our children don’t really have conversations any more- they text message-  it takes a shorter time.  (I will digress some other time on this problem with our developing [or not] communication skills.)  There are articles written about teens at the dinner table texting their friends and not interacting with the family.  We already know that parents do the same (shame on you!)  –  we know who the “crackberry” addicts are among us.

Those of you who know me (really) know about multi-tasking- and how I jokingly refer to it as time-slicing.  But, the key point is the time we make for ourselves and our families- that’s both planning and execution time.  Some experts recommend we spend planning time at the end of the day, others at the beginning.  In actuality, I doubt it makes any difference- just that we do it.  And, at least as important as the planning, is the execution.

Instead of using technology to improve our lives, we seem to have ceded control of our lives to technology.  It is time to insure that the technology we employ serves of our vision, mission, and goals.  And, it is employed in the furtherance of these- not in driving us to do things to keep up with technology.  So, plan, execute- and kiss your spouse and kids!
