The 12th of February.  Another major holiday sacrificed for the efficiency (sic) of business.

The birthdate of our 16th President.  The first to be assassinated.  (Not exactly a tally for which I want to keep track.)

We all were taught that Lincoln was a simple man.  Yup.  That’s what he was- yet, he managed to maneuver our country through the straits of a Civil War, feinting here, moving there, always trying to restore the union of the North and South, to help the United States progress to become one of the world’s greater nations.  Despite the Civil War, he started the Transcontinental Railroad, which was left to his successor to complete (due to his assassination).

Lincoln Cent
The “new” penny

Lincoln was a statesman and not a politician.   He employed his talents to manage our national or international affairs.  Sure, he delved in politics, but did not immerse himself in same.  (One only has to examine our current potential slate to discern the difference.)

We need statesman today.  We need elected officials who recognize the needs of this nation and plan (and follow that plan) their actions based upon those requirements.  In so doing, our infrastructure will be restored to health and our military capabilities will be fully operational. We need roads, bridges, and highways to provide for the common good of the nation.  We need to be able to balance statecraft with a military strength that will deter others from challenging the statesmen.

Today is the appropriate day to reflect upon what Abraham Lincoln provided this country.  To try to keep the various factions together, to provide for the common good, to abolishing the practice of slavery.

To help us dream that a country of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth.

Amen.
