Yesterday, we spoke about the background that greeted Teresa Sullivan, as she began her Presidency of UVa. Today, we’ll talk about what she did to endear herself to this place, steeped in those traditions.

College Life Today…
Over the past four decades, college education has changed a lot. I’m not sure it’s for the better. As I’ve written, the requirements for a B.S. in chemical engineering (my primary degree) have decreased from 144 to 120 credits. And, this is while chemical engineering has expanded to include medical and biological applications, which means additional courses of study need to be added. Now, courses in electrical engineering and aeronautical engineering could be cut to be replaced by these new areas. But, that’s only part of the issue.
Efficient Markets?
I’m sitting here, listening to the talking heads discuss the Supreme Court decision about Obamacare. No- that’s NOT the subject of this blog. But, it is emblematic of the issue- that our official “small government” party is the part of the “big government” when it helps Big Business and against all government that works for any other issue- except for the Defense Department (which is also provided by Big Business).
Women Rule The World
A guest post by Ryan M. Rivera, who requested to share this piece with you.
Gone are the days when women’s role is limited to being a homemaker. Thanks to the brave people who pioneered the waves of feminist movements in the past decades, women have attained great empowerment, and they are now given respect and proper treatment. Gone are the days when women are inferior to men. Now, equal rights are given to both sexes. One is neither dominant nor inferior to the other.
I’ll know it when I see it?
We expect our leaders to possess this ethereal quality called “charisma”. But, once we use the term, we have a problem. Just like our concept of entrepreneurship, there is no universal definition. (I attribute both of these problems to our devotion to political correctness. We want to grant entrepreneurship status to those who clearly are not entrepreneurs, like that will really help grow enterprises. The same is true with charisma.)
3D printing. Coming to a corner near you?
Rapid prototyping. Additive manufacturing. 3D printers do that. (Remember, a 3D printer “prints” three-dimensional objects by producing layer by layer the object desired- with light-activated or heat activated raw materials.) And, I’ve written about them for a while now. When I first began using them, their prices were sky high. And, like laser printers that have dropped in price from $2K to under $ 200, 3D printers can now be bought or made for $ 400 to $ 1200. (Note that 3D printers more closely resemble inkjet printers.) And, the size of some of them are pretty compact, sitting on a desk. Of course, the parts these smaller units made are limited in size (kind of toy-like), but…
Sweet, sweet, sweet
You know that I’m old. I’ve been around a while. And, I recall when the FDA was going to remove saccharin from the marketplace.
It’s not “until death do us part…”
It’s summer time here. Where we drive more, go to the beach, vacation, and do things we don’t normally do. Which means we put ourselves at risk. And, I’ve asked you to prepare a living will. These documents were first created in the 60’s, but the Quinlan case (the one where the woman lasted in a vegetative state [almost] forever) drove the case home for a lot of folks.
