A 3D Update, Part 2

Yesterday, in part 1 (of this 5+ part update), I reviewed how new software and printers will make 3D printing available at home and in the office.  Places like Staples will make it possible for more complicated designs to be produced, as well.  Which means it’s time to sit back, grab a glass of wine (or two or three) and consider what all this technology is going to do to our companies.

A 3D Update (part 1)

No Gravatar

I’ve been remiss keeping you apprised of the developments in 3D Printing.  As, I wrote last Wednesday, when I reported about the pop-up shop in Baltimore.  And, as I repeatedly have said, 3D printing (aka additive manufacturing) is going to change what and how we do things.  I’ve discussed what the aviation industry has already adopted, how medical innovations are affected, among others.  But, now…

What I learned from Chanuka- and a Wedding

No Gravatar

I was honored to be invited to a wedding of two friends- Rick and Maraji.  These two wonderful people decided to have the ceremony in their home on Rosh Chodesh (the new moon) of Chanuka.  (Oh, it was also on a Tuesday- the day of creation when Hashem said it was a good day- twice!) The wedding was wonderful- their words to each other- and us- clearly evoked my emotions.  And, the toast- by their daughter- custom made lyrics sung a capella…  You just had to be there. An Open Letter

Dear Occasional Client*:

I know you just love getting these monthly notes from me.  But, we really do want you to pay the lowest amount of taxes legally required- and to grow your business.  And, it’s really hard for us to help you do that if you think meeting in January or February will work- especially for the year that just ended.   Because once the calendar has closed up 2013- so has your ability to afford yourself of whatever tax breaks existed- and to insure that you can hit 2014 at maximum speed.

I don’t even recall where I heard about it.  But, there was a new pop-up shop.  One devoted to 3D printing.  In Baltimore- just about 70 minutes away.  I searched the web for more information and finally found the place.  It was open from 1 pm to 9 pm seven days a week.

Diversions. (This is not about my favorite card store!)

As a financial and management consultant, I’ve been confronted with situations that would turn your stomach.  (Well, I guarantee you they certainly turned mine!)

Tax Rates- Pass Throughs and C’s

No Gravatar

Soooo.   You’ve heard it.  You know it.  Corporations all complain about that 35% tax rate- but few, if any, are paying taxes at that rate.  Big companies pay virtually ZERO % and middle-market companies pay 15 to 18%.  (By the way, a whole slew of single-owner corporations pay a mandated 35% tax rate!) And, our clients- the ones we convinced to form LLC’s and S entities to save on taxes want us to explain how come they are not paying taxes at the 15% to 18% rates. Another one (ok, a whole bunch of them) bites the dust…

I can remember a time, not so long ago…

Yup, when Congressmen (there were maybe 1 or 2 women, who ‘inherited’ their spouses’ seats) were held in relative high regard.  And, car salesmen were the low men (again- same statement) on the totem pole.  Now, Congressfolks have a public approval rating that would make Idi Amin (go ahead, look him up!) blush- and car salesman have vanished (almost) from the face of the earth.

Healthcare Cost Spiral

No Gravatar

It’s hard to believe how different health care is than normal technology.  When we are dealing with computers, automobiles or other technology, things get cheaper and more efficient with time.  In health care, new innovations either make things possible- sometimes at lower costs, but just as often these developments just cost more money.  Which is why health care comprises some 20% of our GDP.
