Solar. Lunar. Lunisolar. The three major calendars nowadays. The Julian calendar (the solar calendar) is probably the one hanging on your wall. The Moslem faith follows a lunar calendar, which is why Ramadan seems to happen in any season, since the lunar year is shorter than the solar one. My calendar, the Hebrew calendar, is lunisolar. That way the holiday of Spring stays in Spring; the holiday of Sukot, that harbingers the rainy season is situated properly.

Eh, buddy… need some drugs?
I’ll admit it. I’m of the age that I probably need Viagra or Cialis. Now, to be brutally honest, I have to add the adverb “probably” because one also needs a partner for such activities. Which is why I can’t state the need for certain…. But, I digress.
Ready. Fire. Aim.
I met with some new ventures this week. OK. I met with some folks with ideas for new ventures.
One of the first things I reminded them about is that business is operational- not asperational. That means one starts a business- small or large- by making things work. Getting cash flow. Trying business models to see what works.
Free Speech?
It all sounds so simple. But, it’s anything but.
Another example of why lawyers should keep their noses out of healthcare and technology. Because their knowledge is about as comprehensive as a high schooler’s. Which is probably the last time they undertook studying the subjects. (I wrote about this before … Britain determined that lawyers and judges needed to have better understanding of neuroscience, so it is now providing annual courses. America should do the same- including all of science, technology, and medicine.)
Oxygen
Way back when I became interested in dialysis, the buffer of choice was sodium bicarbonate. Now this compound is not exactly easily dissolved in water. But, since we were making batches of dialysate that were used for a single treatment, it didn’t matter that a concentrate couldn’t be produced.
Wanna get rich- quick?
Oh, Roy, not another article about the 1%. Well, yes, this is just that. How can you not discuss this teeny group that owns 1/2 of the wealth that obtains in the world? Read that again. 1% of the population owns 50% of the wealth.
One-on-One
I just had a great weekend. No, not because I pigged out, attending multiple games at the Phillies ballpark. (Admittedly, that didn’t hurt matters at all.)
Pulling it out of thin air?
So, what happens when you put together biologists, physicists, and chemical engineers (of course, they’ll be part of the mix)? Well, if this group from Columbia University is any indication, you get a new kind of engine that may be the answer to our future power needs.
Cosmetic Improvements
You know I’ve been calling for infrastructure improvements for nearly a decade. Because our roads, our bridges, our airports, and our railroads are not even able to handle the demands of today- let alone tomorrow.
Stop! In the Name of Love!
Too much?
We always thought when a patient could withstand chemotherapy (both physically- and with no illness that would impede the function), we should provide these chemicals. As a last ditch effort to save the patient and improve the quality of life. (Just so you know, I didn’t abide that sentiment. I demanded they stop this ridiculous effort for my dad some 30 years ago; with the combination of leukemia, lymphoma, and sarcoma, it was clear that there was no cocktail that would work for all three- and any treatment would render the other diseases worse.)
