How’re you doin’?

I’ve w.adjuvancy.com/wordpress/19693-2/” target=”_blank”>bitched and moaned about the way public corporations manipulate the reporting of their financial information. Where they remove items they don’t feel is germane (like a division that failed; or the drag on earnings is removed), or decided that EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization), Adjusted Net Earnings, and/or Adjusted Sales should be the valid measures for their performance. Because their true performance is abysmal. ( I won’t even mention which firm tried to promote the indicator EBE- earnings before expenses; in other words, just gross sales for the firm.)

You’re using snake oil??????

I’ve ranted against these ubiquitous products for years. Yes, my daughter has heard my complaints. (Worse than the “Verizon” campaign, “Can you here me now”.) I’ve warned you folks about these products. Research has shown- that not only are they dangerous- they don’t perform the job you think they do, either.

What’s the DIF?

No Gravatar

I’ve mentioned (even as recently as yesterday) that the IRS has sophisticated processes to determine who needs to be audited. The algorithms are called DIF and UI DIF. While the IRS explains how and why it does what it does (Publication 556) , the actual formulae are never shared with anyone. Because they would be invitations to cheat- knowing how to tweak the numbers to avoid an audit.

Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe?

Tick, tock. The clock is running.

The IRS believes that folks with self-employment income- those who file Schedule C with their 1040- are hiding income. How much? Enough to add $ 125 billion to the US Treasury. (Notice that is the total of the taxes due, not how much revenue is being unreported.) And, these folks are responsible for about 27% of the total taxes not being paid per the law.

What we wish for…

So, yesterday, we spoke about the one (of the two) place driverless vehicles make a great deal of sense (and the only place where the practice prevails today). Today, instead of talking about agriculture (where these autonomous vehicles are widespread) or trucking (where they are making inroads), we are going to center our discussions about self-driving cars.

I am sure, by now, you recognize that my research and business interests cross a variety of disciplines.  So, my casual reading in any given day can include the following journals:  Microbe, Journal of Bacteriology, Water Reuse, Nephrology News, JASN, JAMA, Harvard Business Review, Strategy+… you get the idea.

Shh! A Secret!

We have finally gotten through the primary season in the US.  (this piece was written when there were still five or six to go.) And, not surprisingly (unless you are a Republican muckety-muck), the majority of votes cast went to those railing against the existing powers.  Whether it was The Donald, Bernie Saunders, Scott Taylor (who beat Congressman Randy Forbes), or a slew of others- that was the key point.  “Other” wins in today’s cycles.

Ah, facts.   We decided to use 4 July 1776  as the date we proclaimed our independence from Brittain.  Even if the Declaration of Independence was issued two or three days earlier.  And, that means we celebrate our Freedoms 12 score years later on this very day.  (Thankfully, it is not among those days that Congress, in its infinite wisdom [read as stupidity], elected to move to Mondays, affording a longer weekend. )  We celebrate the day with fireworks, with going to the beach, with barbeques, and with get-togethers.
