The new tax law has hidden surprises

By now, you may have been contacted by your employer to change your federal and state exemptions. Both because it’s a new year- and because of the tax law that was enacted last year.   Normally, you can follow the instructions that you are provided.  (But NEVER choose 9 or more exemptions- even if you think that makes sense, because that sets off alarms with every tax agency.  I’m not saying you are wrong- I am just saying, why bring on the aggravation.)

THE Letter

I started two days ago discussing the change in the way corporations work.  That change started some 30 years ago, given the permission by Dr. Milton Friedman, when corporations abrogated the social contract (between business and its employees, between business and their local communities)  that had obtained  since the industrial revolution.   But, just this month, the founder and CEO of the largest single investor in corporations, Laurence Fink of BlackRock, Inc., implored the executives of some 1000 firms in the US and worldwide to re-engage in that social contract.

It’s that time of year again.  Where I have the perennial argument with some clients and friends about who really owns American corporations.  After all, they show me their stock certificates.  That is their “proof” that they own a portion of the corporation.

Oodles of noodles?

I’ve written many times that my mom was a terrible cook. Which is one of the reasons why when when she inherited the responsibility to host our family Pesach Seder (for all of some 28 folks), we picked up the pre-cooked meals at a West Hempstead (kosher) caterer.

Tesla has company- lots of it!

So, we’ve been discussing (Wednesday, yesterday)  electric trucks- the big rigs, Class 8 vehicles.  And, you’d think that Tesla was the only one getting ready to market these rigs from those discussions.  No way!

Big Rigs, electric and otherwise

Yesterday, we touched on the new tractors that Tesla is developing.  The Tesla Semi incorporates what they call “Enhanced Autopilot” – the same sort of stuff that exists in Tesla cars.   This means the rig is loaded with cameras and radar- and those devices let it determine what is the traffic flow, how to safely change lanes- and, most importantly, how to pull over into a controlled sop should the driver fall asleep or become incapacitated (via a heart attack or something similar.)
