Valentine’s Day? That’s what everyone says it is. (It’s also the 19th day of Sh’vat.)
Except, in my tradition, this was a holiday celebrated by others. Given the official name for the day as “Saint Valentine’s Day”, it should surprise no one that it was not part of my routine growing up. A child going to yeshiva (a Jewish [very] religious school) is not to be considering any day involving saints as pertaining to them. (That’s true, regardless of Hallmark’s yeoman efforts to make us all forget that first word of the celebration.)
Of course, as I got older, this got me into a few conundrums. My fiancé, having never been that religious, had no such qualms. And, she could not understand- or accept- that there would be no candy, no flowers, and no cards on Valentine’s Day. To her, it meant I didn’t love her. So, I ‘was educated’ to participate in this “Hallmark Holiday”.
That didn’t mean I still didn’t get accused of “not loving someone enough”. But, that happened much later- and not on Valentine’s Day. (Yes, I truly believe that Men are from Mars and Women from Venus. I have recent proof!)
So, I’m wishing all of you readers the best Valentine’s Day. Because I love the fact that you read my blog. And, as such, I am borrowing one of the great card ideas produced my friend, Janette Fuller, to provide my wishes.
From the creative mind and fingers of Janette Fuller
I suggest you hurry up and purchase one of her fantastic creations. (It may be too late to have it arrive for use today- and you should consider her other creations for birthdays, next year’s Valentines, or any day of the week. Because they will cement the believe that you do, indeed, love the recipient.)
They’re that great.
It’s definitely a Hallmark Holiday, but I’m such a sap for it. Bring on the cards, candy and flowers!!
Especially the chocolates… Right, Martha?!!
Well, thank you. Thank you for reading my blog, too. And of course, you knew that anyone of our generation would laugh at your title, coming from a time when VD meant something else!

That was the point of the title, Alana!
It’s a nice date night for us, but if it were the only such time we celebrated or showed love for one another, we wouldn’t have lasted almost 36 years.

A great date night! But, you are right- there are at least 364 others each and every year (this year, it’s 365) to ensure we share our love and affection, Holly.
love the card! and enjoy your valentine’s day.. growing up in India, we did not celebrate this as well until, well cultures merged and meshed into something new when I was already in college.. and those hallmark cards – they certainly made me want to find someone to hand over a card to..

I’m with you on that last statement, Vidya!
What a fun card! Hubby and I are celebrating our 54th Valentine’s Day together but we aren’t big on “love” holidays. We share our love 365 days a year and he always brings me a fresh rose from our garden when in bloom. So Hallmark doesn’t get anything from us. LOL
I agree- if you need one day to express yourself, choose the day that ends in Y!
This year, I made my own Valentine. Because a sketchbook, photocopier, scissors, and rubber cement were all I needed for a very nice Valentine that was fun and creative. I would share it here but that seems to be beyond my techie skills, lol. Needless to say, it was fun, and the design will become future note cards for future craft shows!

I did that last year- when I had someone for whom it would mean something.
Glad you had a great time being creative, Alice!
