National Compliment Day

Oh, goody!  Another Hallmark event.  National Compliment Day…

Wait.  This one wasn’t really invented by Hallmark!

Two gals from New Hampshire- Kathy Chamberlin and Debby Hoffyman came up with this special day.  And it seems to have legs.  Because providing compliments to another human being is a way to effect connections.

Given the pandemic- where we isolated from everyone- isn’t the ability to create connections a great idea?  Do we want to stay isolated from the rest of the world even longer?

So, let’s get real.

Not just today, but we all should take the time out- EVERY SINGLE DAY- to thank folks for the little things they do.  Pandemic or not.

Too many of our family and friend situations have us noticing every little peccadillo, leaving us unsatisfied.  Especially during the pandemic, when we can’t go out and do things we really want to do.  So, instead of noticing that smile that appeared when we walked in the room, the cup of coffee that was made and waiting for us…we think about something they didn’t do to make our day perfect.

Good Bad Balance Beam

Why isn’t we can’t see all those great things?  That they outweigh the petty little things that we total up.  Even though the good things really outweigh those small items that tick us off.  (Amazing how we can’t create a balance beam to make us recognize that fact.)

After all, a compliment is one of the most powerful human things we can provide.  It helps us validate another adult, help a child feel great.. in general, it just helps another person perceive a better day.  It helps us- the giver, too, just for giving it.

So, let’s start a whole new thing.  From today forward.

It’s time to put the ill will of the pandemic behind us.

  1. I liked this post!
I learned (or relearned a new word: peccadillo! It’s very appropriate here!)

You’ve made some great points, and I can see that life would be happier for all of we all took them to heart.

However…not all will, but I can do my part and you can do yours. “Brighten the corner where you are!” 🎶

  2. Good point about neglecting the good and only noticing the bad. Makes one think a little bit more about their daily interactions with the people in their life. Nice reminder to step outside of one’s self.

  3. I haven’t heard of Compliment Day, but I like it!
You’re so right, Roy. I told a cashier how much I appreciated her hard work and sweet attitude and she almost started to cry. She’d been working so hard and was dealing with so many cranky people that just a little kindness turned her day around.
