Another one?

Yes, it’s another holiday.  Tonight starts Sukot- the full moon holiday of Tishrei.  (By the way- did you catch the lunar eclipse this morning?)  After finishing our 40 days of introspection, which culminated in the most solemn full day of fasting for Yom Kipur, we now have the holiday of joy.  (Sukot has another name- the Time of Celebration.)  Sukot is one of the three “festivals” delineated in the Tora, the Bible.

But, this holiday does mean that since the 25th of September, we have missed four days of work- with four or five move coming over the next 8 days.  (This is not counting weekends.)   It’s why this time of year always involves a little more rushing around- because we try to work more hours before or after the holidays, so our budgets stay balanced, our clients don’t feel neglected, and/or no one feels that we’re shirking work.

Suka (sukkah)

So, if you want to know where I am today, I’ve included a picture of a suka. Sukot is the holiday of booths- to commemorate the harvest season and to honor the commandment that we spend this holiday in temporary dwellings, to remind us that the Supreme Being provides us with all the shelter we need.

May you all have a wonderful holiday. I’ll be back at work (overtime, too) real soon.

(By the way, there won’t be a post for tomorrow, one of the “special” days, where work is prohibited.  Don’t worry, these holidays will be over soon- and then, I won’t have another big one until April.)

  1. Seeing some of eclipse right now reminds me of how frightened people used to be of a solar eclipse. Without the true facts presented by the likes of Gallleo the facts in evidence at the time were not true.

Like the shoppers in the Ragu commercial think to themselves,”whatever poor decisions have I made ?” We too wonder what else we decided without a full knowledge of the truth.

At times we may see the true facts but how many times have we acted, voted, voted or made decisions without knowing the facts?

Like the children in Egypt seeking the safety of booths to protect us, we can turn to the SB to comfort us when it looks like something is eating the sun, or in this case, the moon.

    1. Well, the eclipse is not normally associated with this holiday- but the rest of the sentiments are absolutely true.
That’s why Abraham- who recognized that the moon’s constant appearance and disappearance could never be the deity his neighbors’ considered- kept seeking for the one true deity, the Supreme Being.

      1. As part of my quest for truth amid political voices smearing each other to the point of libel it is as if I were on Abraham’s quest. It was obvious to him the moon was not the SB nor were the idols he smashed that his earthly father made.

I know where truth is not. But how do I find out where it is?

Can I look to thee SB to answer a question about who to vote for? Or to tell me the truth of any thing?

        1. I don’t think the Supreme Being has gotten into politics. (Oh, sure, there are whole bunch of politicians who swear that god (deliberately lower case) is on their side, but that’s about as likely as they will stop listening to their corporate bribers. (I’m sorry, their lobbyist contributors. Yeah, right- I’m not sorry, because the first statement is correct.)

          1. Voting for our leaders is a very serious business, Roy. I don’t want to feel responsible for choosing wrong. I would rather not vote for either than vote for the wrong one.

In the Bible the way the kings behaved floated or sunk kingdoms. You might argue that my measly vote is inconsequential, but if no one chooses correctly we are sunk.

So, yes, I think it is something that the SB watches and I am wondering if he would help us choose if we asked. Furthermore, I think if most of us asked, the SB would be happier with our country.

          2. I don’t think the SB chooses sides in any country… And, certainly does not believe that folks should be fighting for “god and country”… Unless one is fighting one of the long-gone seven tribal nations.
