Tonight begins the holiday of Sukot (the Festival of Booths). It is a 7 day holiday, immediately followed by yet another holiday, Shmini Atzeret (the Eighth Day of Assembly). Some folks are confused and think all 8 days constitute Sukot- but they are wrong.

Yom Kipur- The Day of Atonement
The 10th Day of Tishrei. That’s tonight’s (and tomorrow’s) Hebrew Date, which means it will be Yom Kipur. (The Tora [the bible] says – it was evening, it was morning; one day. All days start when the sun goes down.) This day marks the end of 40 days of introspection, repentance, and preparing ourselves to be better humans and to make the world a better place- with renewed vigor.
Rosh Hashana 5784
A decade birthday!
So, today is my younger daughter’s birthday. (She is my middle child, but, for almost a decade, she was my youngest child. Until a surprise child arrived when she was almost 8 years old.)
She’d be 99 tomorrow…
The day after tax day… 2007. I am summoned to visit a potential client with a problem. They have been using PCLaw (a superb accounting system for lawyers, accountants, and consultants- i.e., anyone who needs to track and bill time) for several years, a program with which I was and am intimately familiar. We talk and agree that I will assist them to resolve their current problems.
The Official First Day of Elul- but the second day of the new moon
This is the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul, a minor holiday. The first (yesterday) was the anniversary of my eldest daughter’s bat mitzva. (I won’t say how many years!) Mazel tov, Shosh! The second day of the holiday (today) is the 26th anniversary (called a Yahrzeit) of the death of my mom.

Estelle Ackerman Kaplan, A’H
I am going to date myself. (No, not that kind of date!)
I am going to share a few tidbits about my mom, Estelle Ackerman Kaplan whose birthday would be this coming Sunday were she were still alive.
Born on the 4th of July
Today is the 4th of July, what we Americans call our Independence Day. Despite the fact that the Declaration was issued a few days earlier than this some 247 years ago. And, as was true for Israel when it declared its independence in 1948, our neighbors weren’t so sure we were independent. OK. For America, it wasn’t the “neighbors”- it was Britain. But, even when Britain conceded it lost the States, it wasn’t until the completion of the War of 1812 that our battle(s) with Britain truly achieved our independence.
A birthday observation
Today is my father’s birthday. Unfortunately, our relationship was not the ideal; we were not especially close. However, I will share some attributes of his character with you- and for his grandchildren and great grandchild. And, just because someone wasn’t a great parent doesn’t mean he didn’t make a big difference in this world.
I’m back- finally!
After being hospitalized since the 27th of March, I am now home. I’m weak, but home.
I have trained nurses coming to the house thrice a week to maintain my wound recovery and I have PT coming two more times a week to help me increase my strength and endurance.
