Trains, planes…. Oh, forget the planes!

I have always loved trains.  I can recall my grandparent’s home, contiguous to the old Pennsylvania Railroad yards.  Which would keep me mesmerized for hours on end.  (My examination was accompanied by a slew of rainbow colored 45s I played on my RCA Victrola.  I was all of 2 or 3 when this fascination began.)   I toured the PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) lines,  the LIRR (Long Island Railroad- which Governor Nelson Rockefeller had the audacity to declare the finest commuter railroad in the nation, which would mean train travel in the US really had to be the pits).

Crocodile Tear Time?

I’ve written before about wages (here’s one example– or you could buy my book [paperback or Kindle] 🙂 ) and the purported claims that employers can’t find qualified employees.  I’m not going to say that all the jobs offered are scooped up on the spot.  After all, should an entrepreneur decide to build a new pharmaceutical plant in the middle of Kansas, I would not be surprised that s/he could not find a qualified Regulatory specialist within 25 miles.  But, one could be found- and I’m sure someone could be willing to move to their location.

A rose is a rose is a rose…

There’s been a whole lot of hoopla about a CBO (Congressional Budget Office)  report.  The one that announced that 2.3 million Americans might opt to stop working over the next ten years.  Because PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act- aka Obamacare) has given then something these folks didn’t have before.

Indemnity my a..

Oh, I know, you’ve heard that some folks’ insurance bill have escalated.  I will not deny that changing from a catastrophic-coverage plan to a real health care plan is not more (even much more) expensive- but in the grand scheme of things for all citizens, that is not a big change.  Because most Americans get their health care insurance at work.

PAC ’em in, it’s only our elections on the line

We’ve talked about the Koch Brothers and their lobbying groups. Other than ALEC, most of them are recently founded.  That is not true for Karl Rove’s group- Crossroads GPS.  As you recall, it spent some $ 208 million in 2012, while its sister group (PAC American Crossroads) employed some $ 117 million- making it second right behind the Koch Brothers.

Of the people, by the people, and for the people?

From the second John Kerry was attacked via the “Swiftboating” episode, I knew that Americans (and, given that we seem to invading other countries electoral political process, the world) were in for a heap of trouble.  You see, the group (I am clearly being of generous mood, here) behind this attack, the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” was a 527 organization.   A “tax exempt” organization that focuses on  “issues”.

This song still seems to be true.

Things have certainly changed. And, not for the better. Last week, I ran a series about wages in America. (I also have a Kindle and a paperback with even more such thoughts available for your reading pleasure.) Corporations are not paying living wages, expecting the middle class to subsidize their profits by providing the funds for food stamps, welfare, and Medicaid for their low-paid staff. It is obvious this is true, since the middle class and the lower class provide more than 1/2 the total federal receipts, with corporations barely providing 10%.
