I have designer genes…

I bought T-shirts with just that statement for my girls (then, my only children) some three decades ago.  It clearly was my sense of humor- but my sense of destiny and life.

designergenes

We all have designer genes.  Designed by the Supreme Being, each of us has gifts that we must learn to exploit.  I’ve already written what my choices have been- and the questions I have when I changed direction.

But, this past weekend, I was reminded of the strength of designer genes.  And, how our lives do seem to modify the expression of those genes.

I went to see a great game- the Phillies, of course- playing the Dodgers.  Normally, it makes no difference what team the Phils play- because I only care about them. (And, as my daughter reminded me during the game- I expect everyone to perform at their peak.  I have no less a standard for my team than I have for myself.)

Why did I mention the opponent, then?  Because my son-in-law is a Dodgers fan.  (Obviously, designer genes don’t get transferred upon marriage.)  And, that was why I took my daughter, my son-in-law, and my grandson to a great game.  My favorite player (Chase Utley) hit a home run.  The weather was grand.  And, there was action on the field- from both teams.

And, my grandson, all of five years old, enjoyed the game.  And, let me know he decided that it was imperative that he know the 18X table.  Reciting the multiples in rapid fashion.  While spelling words, reading the signs – including the tongue twisting name of Erisbel Arruebarrena.

Yes, my parents and grandparents always wanted me to ‘enjoy’ children like I was.  And, I am thrilled their prayers came true.  My eldest has a wonderful position of great esteem- helping to break the glass ceiling for women- and participates in a wonderful family life.  My middle child is doing her heart’s content- affianced to a fellow to who adores her.  (I couldn’t convince her to travel 300 miles for a single game.  I guess my genes are not that strong).  My youngest (by a long shot) took a day off from his high-stress (and long hours) job to celebrate the graduation of his childhood (read yesterday) friend’s graduation from the US Naval Academy, proving the need to honor one’s friends and family.

Nourish your genes.  Nourish the development of our lives- because our actions can enhance the activity of certain genes and repress the actions of others.

To steal the motto from one of our services- Be All You Can Be.  Because if you don’t, the world will miss out.
