A Day in the Park (not!)

Today, I did a lot of nothing. But, a whole  lot of somethings transpired.

My son and I began our journey at 8:30. From Alexandria to Philadelphia, to watch our beloved Phillies. My son’s first home game this year, since he has been at the University of Michigan- both for school and work until last Friday.

We were going to take a slight side trip, too- to see my daughter (his sister), my son-in-law, and my grandson for a few hours before the game. His first visit to their (rental) house, one which they are leaving this week to move to their newer (purchased) home nearby.

On the way up, it poured on and off.   My son and I discussed the clouds and the fog, observing the shapes, colors, and sizes. We discussed politics (a very normal occurrence in our household). We caught up with one another’s lives- since a few hours in the car beat snippets of calls and texts that occur throughout the semester and work days. Especially since we did other things the day before on our day of rest (including spending several hours in prayer).

By the time we reached Delaware, we were informed (him via iESPN and me via Philly Text) the ballgame had been cancelled. So, we decided there was no need to rush our family visit.  Which we didn’t.

My grandson (2 y) regaled us for the first 30 minutes or so with his own special dance steps, and followed that up by bringing us up to date with his life and feelings. We are so lucky he is loquacious.

We caught up with the lives of my son-in-law and daughter, too.  We discussed paint colors, moving, new opportunities, short term goals, music… And stayed until what would have been the third inning of the ball game.

On the way home, my son and I continued our dialogue. There are two snippets worth mentioning. My son observed that this was his first vacation in a long time. He further explained that was because this was not like coming home, but just going to a special place for vacation. Yes, he is growing up and older. My house (and/or his mother’s house) are his- and yet are no longer his primary residence.

He also stated that had he awakened Sunday morning knowing he would not get to see the Phillies- or spend some time at Citizen’s Bank Park,  he would have been ticked (editorial changes effected) off. I reminded him we had tickets for the playoffs and World Series (yes, already- we [and all other Phillies Phans] are that sure…). But, he reminded me that I knew what he meant. And, that this still had been a great day.

Yes, it was.

  1. It looks like what could have been a loss was a save. Don’t you just love those alone moments with your adult kids? I also can relate to going to your daughter’s house and having your grandson be sure you came just to see him – he did get top billing, after all.

    1. Bonnie, you have it right.
I had to do some calculations. My son bought me a Phillies shirt for ‘Phathers’ day. Which I will wear this Friday at our next game together (and told him so). Yesterday, I wore the shirt with my grandson’s and my picture on it- @ Citizens Bank (Phillies Stadium).

  2. Your post reminded me of that new country song “Just Fishin” by Trace Adkins. You can look it up on YouTube if you are so inclined, but it’s about spending time with your kids, even if they think you’re doing something else. 🙂

  3. This is such a wonderful post! This end of the world, we still live with our parents if we are in the same city, yes…shocked? We Indians still believe in staying with our parents if we are residing / working / studying in the same city and it is a “crime” to stay apart! And now that I am working in a different city, we stay apart and they make it a point to come EVERY weekend, and they treat me like they used to twenty years ago! Parents I say 🙂

    Lovely day! 🙂
