Finally, A Personal Healthcare Record (PHR) Worth Using

I should start by saying I don’t have an iPhone.  Not because it’s an Apple product, but because I have used another platform for years and I have political problems with its production (‘nuff said).  But, there are folks who are creating wonderful apps for the device.  (Many are now doing so for Android phones, which are outselling the iPhone by about 3:1.)

One of the apps many folks need is available for free- iBioMed– for use on the web or on the iPhone and iPad.  Dr. Iwegbue and his wife (South Carolina doc) developed this to aid them in managing the ailments of their special needs children.  It seems to be useful for managing asthma, allergies, autism, epilepsy, among other traumatic ailments.First Screens for the iBioMed app

iBioMed provides a reliable personal heathcare record, thereby augmenting disease management, data sharing,  with potential for education, as well.  (You should know that Microsoft used to offer “HealthVault” that integrated with various devices and websites. It’s gone.  Google has Google Health.  But, if I were the CEO of Google or Microsoft, I would be looking to acquire this product to update my healthcare app- now.)

iBioMed includes a treatment record for physician and caregiver notes, prescription data, all with reminders  that can integrate with a diet planner.  Better yet, you can decide what you want to graph to discern trends and outcomes more easily. There’s even a newsfeed and a forum for questions.

Once you log in, you can choose your health record (online journal), meal planner, evaluation graphs, record sharing, newsfeeds, discussion for a, and to sync with your mobile device (iPhone, iPad, iTouch- I use the web app since I have a different smartphone).   The health record lets you monitor medications, supplements, diets, tests, treatments, diagnoses, allergies, and evaluations.  (A journal to keep notes is also present).

You can learn more about the product here or join their Facebook page.  You can view a presentation. But, to be honest, I would just click on the link above and join in- it will lead you to the link for your “iDevice” should you have one.   I have spoken to the “inventors”- they won’t sell your information (or let them access it) to anyone- but it’s not yet encrypted.   As soon as that is complete, physicians  should consider using the web version to link up with their own healthcare information systems.

  1. Roy,

Wonderful post! I have to say that I do NOT have any kind of a smartphone. My fiance does have a Blackberry Storm. Since he incurs numerous issues with it, I call it the “smart phone that isn’t very smart!” Although I am very comfortable and experienced with the latest technology, I promised myself when I first started business that I would NEVER rely on the use of technology to live my daily life. That said, I try to store important phone numbers and addresses and such the old fashioned way – in my brain (and on paper of course)!
Taking all of that into consideration, I must say that I really enjoyed your post. It doesn’t directly affect me in anyway because of the statement I made above, but I do like to keep up with the latest news!
    Thank you for sharing!

    1. Barbara Hi, Barbara: I enjoyed your comment. And, I think you can and should find some technology with which you are comfortable. It will make your efforts more facile, help coordinate your efforts, and afford you the ability to achieve results and satisfaction more readily. Thanks for your time reading my blog, and we should stay in contact in a more direct fashion. Roy
