Happy Birthday

So, let’s see, we believe it was 238 years ago. When (give or take a day or two), our forefathers promulgated a document that still brings chills to my spine.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…”

Yes, these words are out of context. But, the second I hear them- they are all the context I need.  Even if we had to – and still have to- fight each and every day to make these words not hollow, but true, real, and our normal practice.

It’s also another birthday.  The day, 23 years ago, that my son was brought into this world.  Oh, it was the due date.  But, he arrived via Caesarian section.  A surprise to an older man- one who thought that his two daughters would be his only children.  Only to have this child augment that legacy a decade or so later.
