Quoth the raven: Nevermore…

I recall that wonderful poem by Edgar Allen Poe well. It was probably the first poem that piqued my fancy. (Oh, sure, Annabelle Lee almost came close- but then I was introduced to the sublime e.e. cummings…) But, I digress.

It’s the month of the flood in my religion. While it started much earlier, it was on the 17th day of the month of Cheshvan (4 days hence), the rainstorm managed to cover the Earth with water. 365 days later (one solar year- not a lunar year, which was the normal calendar mode), the water had receded and the land was dry. Noach (Noah) wanted to know if it was safe to exit the ark. So, he sent out a raven.

Why a raven? Because a raven searches for carcasses. And, given that the flood drowned the world’s inhabitants, there should be plenty of them available, should the flood have ended. But Noach’s raven refused to travel- it circled the ark and returned.

Now, the raven is also a very intelligent animal. But, also likes to stay in comfortable environments (the ones it knows well). Which is why I am explaining this to you.

You see, many of us are just like the raven. We are intelligent beings all looking to find our way. But, many of us prefer to stay in comfortable environments. Even though we want to start our own business, our own venture. But, it’s scary outside the comforts of our lives.

We are afraid we will fail. We are afraid folks will point to us. But, most often, it’s because we have the ideas, but not the internal strength to act on those impulses.

I’m here to advise you that we should try our hand developing our idea into a reality. To make a budget and plan, knowing in advance how much it will take (time and money) and jump in the fray. But, make that budget firm- and watch your expenditures.

We will either make it a great success or we won’t. But, we can’t let it become a money pit. And, most importantly, we will learn great things about ourselves, our ideas, and our abilities.

I’m looking forward to hear about your adventures.

  1. You’ll never grow if you never go outside your comfort zone. Loved the info about ravens – interesting! And how do we know what month Noah’s flood began? Just curious, as I had never heard there was any record. Thanks!

    1. Ruthanne:
Absolutely great addition. If you read the Bible (in almost any language…
Chapter 7, verse 11: In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month (Cheshvan), on the seventeenth day of the month, on this day, all the springs of the great deep were split, and the windows of the heavens opened up.

Oh, and the day the world was dry? The next chapter: And in the second month, on the twenty seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.
A lunar year is 355 days. Those extra 10? 365 or a solar year.

Thanks again for the addition and your visit.

  2. Oh my goodness, Edgar Allen Poe. Brings me back to high school! I haven’t thought about him really since then, thank you for reminding me!
