Simulcast? 2 Blogs in a Pod? You tell us!

This post is an experiment.  You’ve heard and probably watched a TV/Radio Simulcast.  Well, Elise Boysaw (KESA Collections) had this great idea to have a blog post written about the subject of her newest painting, 65 degrees.  (Yes, Elise uses Fahrenheit; I use Centigrade.)  So, I am writing this post about sleep.

We all know that when we are awake, our normal temperature is 37 C (98.6 F).  But, to get our body ready for sleep, our brain causes our body temperature to drop by about a degree (to 36 C).  This slows down metabolism, so that we can have a restful sleep.

And, while we are at it, we should consider our pillows.  So many people have been sucked in to buying those “Memory Pillows”, the ones that conform to your body.   The problem is that they do- and they wrap about your head, making you too hot.  So, you DON’T get a good night’s sleep.

We also should consider wearing socks when we sleep. Oh, I know, that’s not highly romantic. (I was married to a woman who wore Dr. Denton’s. [I ruined my fair share of them, too.])  But, cold feet are really not very conducive to a good sleep.  So, if you find your feet are cold- or you wake up in the middle of the night, try wearing socks- you may find this non-romantic endeavor puts you in a much better mood for the whole day, since you got that good night’s sleep.

The bedroom temperature is also important.  (No, not THAT temperature, silly!)  Most physicians recommend dropping the temperature to 20 C (68 F), but the range is 18 to 22 C (65 to 72 F).  You need to find the proper one- hopefully, it’s not like those number beds, where each of you have different optimum temperatures….

Finally, you should remember that it’s best to sleep in a “cave-like” room. One that is dark, quiet, cool, and relatively dry (like 50% relative humidity).  This also lets you get the proper amount of sleep.

Enjoy your Z’s- and Elise’s painting!

  1. What a great idea for a joint post. The feet thing is so true. I keep a small down throw at the bottom of my side of the bed just for my feet. I’m always the first of us to get cold and that way I don’t have a lumpy blanket in between Bob and me.

  2. I love winter because I sleep better in the cold (read 62 degrees F.) My feet do get cold and socks annoy me so I put an extra cover down there. I also want to suggest a person who is as hot blooded as I am should not get a tempurpedic bed. I love mine, but in the summer when we can’t even get the AC to cool down the house to lower than 77 degrees and we start to sleep while it is still 80, my bed and I fight until we both get to a comfortable temperature several hours after I get in. I don’t suggest sleeping with two dogs because each one’s temperature is around 101 degrees. They get on either side of me and I have to throw covers on and off until I am comfortable.

  3. Roy – what happens when the room is too cold? I seem to sleep better when the room is much colder. Its just getting up that is the problem. And after an hour, the socks have to come off – too hot.
BY the way – what part do blankets play?
Oh and Elise, I love your painting fits with my favorites and I love the blues.

    1. I sleep in a cold room, as well, Roberta. Proof that norms are just that. It seems to depend upon the metabolism of the individual.
I never wear socks (or anything else)…
Blankets keep our body warm- since we tend to lose heat dramatically…
      Thanks for the visit.

  4. Hi Roy… well perhaps I’d better ditch the socks and chuck the Memory Pillow! I just bought one to try it out. Now I’m not so sure.

To tell you the truth I sleep like a log. My big thing is trying to build a new habit to actually ‘get to bed’… so I get enough of it. (Sleep that is!)

    Thanks for sharing Roy!

    1. Jayne:
I understand that well, too. And, those of us who don’t sleep much, generally do sleep like logs. Our bodies soak up the regenerative powers of sleep like a sponge does to water.

Thanks for dropping in and your comments.

  5. Oh, I so love talking about sleep all the time! 🙂

My feet get very cold…night or day. I have this huge collection of weirdly colored warm socks to put me to sleep! Also, someone once told me that body loses a lot of heat through the head, so it is better to cover it while sleeping. But I really haven’t tried it much. Warm feet = good sleep for me!

And because I have lived in warmer weather most of my life, room temperatures really are to be controlled. Right now, we are at 15 degrees (yes, I talk in Celsius too) and we are considering that cold!

But as long as what works in getting a good nights sleep; there is nothing else that matters!

  6. The main difference between blogging and podcasting lies in the way the information is received. A blog is designed for reading, and a podcast is designed for listening. Blogs are usually read on a computer. In contrast, a podcast can be listened to over the Internet, on an iPod, an MP3 player, or, in some cases, a cell phone.

  7. I been trying to create my own color palette so I can work on my art project. I was wondering what exactly do they mean by a mono, complement, triad, tetrad, analogic, and accented analogic. So I was wondering if anyone can explain to me how colors work together?
