Voting counts. Not just tomorrow (don’t tell me you are not voting!), but every election.
Now, tomorrow, we choose a President, a few Senators, and every Congressperson. That will set how the Federal Government will run for the next two to four years. Pretty important.
But, there’s more. 12 states will choose new governors. 86 of 99 state legislative bodies are up for election. That will determine how your State Government will run for the next two years or so.
God knows how many localities will have their folks up for election.
But, every vote for every office counts. Your state legislature will decide your state taxes, your roads, your highways, your schools. Some of them will try to bar folks from voting in the future. Others will disallow abortion (let’s not BS one another and say they are making things safer). If you don’t vote, then you are saying you don’t care.
But, these same legislators are the ones who will decide if- and how- every district will be gerrymandered to insure that incumbents never lose an election.
It was doubtful that there will be significant changes in the US House. Oh, the Democrats were expected to garner a few more seats- or not- but Mr. Trump seems to have disgusted so many people, the downballot choices are being affected. Either because folks are avoiding the pall of Trump- or because they are so disgusted with the GOP they won’t vote at all.
(So many of them would consider it the end of the world if they voted for a single Democratic candidate. I never understood that philosophy. Sure, I vote for one party more than the other- but when someone can put up a Donald Trump or a David Duke- how can a sentient being vote for such bigots? And, no, I am not a fan of Hillary- but given the field (now that’s a GREAT exaggeration), there really is no other choice.)
The Senate? That’s really up for grabs, too. It will probably become a Democratic majority body- but the question is whether it’s a narrow majority or a much larger win for that party.
But, if you don’t vote, then you have no say in how things will be for the next two- or more years. And, the President is only one leg of the Federal government- and both the legislative and the executive will select our next judges (the judicial leg, the third one). Unless certain GOP Senators can sway the remaining members to block any and all nominations.
So, things are up for grabs. Ergo, vote tomorrow. It is your duty as a citizen. And, we (the United States) need all the help we can get.
Oh, and while one party has been trying it’s damndest to make voting tough, consider this. How many of you camp out to get tickets to that concert or sports event you just have to attend? Or wait for hours to buy that brand new wide-screen TV to add 4 cm to your viewing pleasure?
So, suck it up. Wait the hour. Bring you iPad or Kindle to while the time away.
Vote.

One of the few positives of this election season is that it has made some of us take note of how fragile our freedoms are.
