So, we celebrate today as our Independence Day.  Despite the fact that the Declaration was issued a few days earlier than this some 242 years ago.    And, as was true for Israel when it declared its independence in 1948,  the neighbors weren’t so sure we were independent.  OK.  Not the neighbors- Brittain.  Sure , it decided to pull out of the States, but the War of 1812 was really the end of our long battle(s) for independence from Brittain.

Our country is changing.

Normally, we would say that change is good. But, the change that is coming over America is anything but. I admit that as a Jewish individual, I may feel this change more prominently than most. Why would that be true?

It’s a truism that reforming the corporate tax rates should encourage businesses to invest in ways to improve their bottom line. That normally means finding a way to enhance productivity. But, that also means the lower rates are part of a program to remove special interests.

Jeff Poelvoorde and I spent months convincing folks to come to a traditional Saturday morning service. And, with time, a wonderful Jewish community- shared lives, families, food- developed. CCXLVI. Oh, and XXVI, 2!

Ah, facts.  Long before our current president, we weren’t always meticulous about dates and facts.   After all, we did decide to use 4 July 1776  as the date we proclaimed our independence from Britain.  Even if the Declaration of Independence was issued two or three days earlier.  And, that means we celebrate our Freedom 241 years later today.  (Thankfully, it is not among those days that Congress, in its infinite wisdom [read as stupidity], elected to move to Mondays, affording a longer weekend. )  We celebrate the day with fireworks, with going to the beach, with barbeques, and with get-togethers.

Armistice Veterans Day

No Gravatar

It was on the 11th hour of the 11th month in 1918 that “The Great War” ended.  Thaw was what the he first World War (no one expected the second- but they should have) was called that back then.    It’s the name my father learned, too- and it was among the last sanctioned battles in which my grandfather (my mother’s father) was a participant.
