Today is the first day of Chanuka. (That means last night was the first night of the holiday.) For those of you who follow the Gregorian calendar, you would say the holiday is arriving early. Not as early as it did a few years ago, when it landed on Thanksgiving- but pretty early, nevertheless. (Chanuka always falls on the 25th day of Kislev, though, on our calendar.)

3rd of Nissan
Today, I will talk about a diminutive woman. Only in stature.
My mother’s mother, my grandmother Bessie, has her yahrzeit today. She died on the 3rd day of Nissan. Here’s where it gets tricky. I own a document that indicates Bessie died in 1969. But, the Social Security Administration indicates she died in 1974.
Humor me. I’ll get there shortly.
Ever think the universe is playing tricks with you?
Well, last week, during the holiday of Chanuka, I managed to become engrossed in three very bizarre postings. And, being the techie that I am, I found the confluence pretty funny.
O, Chanuka, O Chanuka, Come light the menora…
Tonight will be the first night of Chanuka, the 25th day of Kislev. For those of you who celebrate Christmas, you might recognize that number- 25. That date wasn’t chosen by accident by the first Christians. (It also explains why this is one of the few- the very few- holidays Christians celebrate on the “eve”- because it derives from the Jewish rule that a day is one evening and one morning….)

Dedication on the 25th
So, it’s getting close to the first or second holiest day of the year for Christians. And, it’s getting close to a minor holiday for Jews. One that Christians tend to elevate so that they feel they are “giving equal time”.
Tonight
Tonight is the first night of Chanuka. That means it is the 25th of Kislev. (It is also the day our family traditionally celebrated my grandfather’s birthday- who only knew his birthday was on Chanuka.) The holiday of Chanuka is NOT the same as Christmas, even though the Christians adopted the 25th for their celebration.
A 3D Update (part 1)
I’ve been remiss keeping you apprised of the developments in 3D Printing. As, I wrote last Wednesday, when I reported about the pop-up shop in Baltimore. And, as I repeatedly have said, 3D printing (aka additive manufacturing) is going to change what and how we do things. I’ve discussed what the aviation industry has already adopted, how medical innovations are affected, among others. But, now…
What I learned from Chanuka- and a Wedding
I was honored to be invited to a wedding of two friends- Rick and Maraji. These two wonderful people decided to have the ceremony in their home on Rosh Chodesh (the new moon) of Chanuka. (Oh, it was also on a Tuesday- the day of creation when Hashem said it was a good day- twice!) The wedding was wonderful- their words to each other- and us- clearly evoked my emotions. And, the toast- by their daughter- custom made lyrics sung a capella… You just had to be there. Continue reading What I learned from Chanuka- and a Wedding
Chanuka
Tonight is the first night of Chanuka. For those of you who follow the Gregorian calendar, you would say the holiday is arriving early. It won’t fall this ‘early’ again for some 80,000+ years. (Chanuka always falls on the 25th day of Kislev, though, in our calendar.)
