The disadvantage of getting most of one’s news during the day from NPR is that we don’t always get the real facts.  No, I’m not claiming NPR is fake news.  But, as happens when I listen (or even watch) Israeli news- with its rapid fire (and you thought New Yorkers talked quickly) presentation- including names and places that are unfamiliar, I sometimes get the wrong impression.

Optimism v. Pessimism. Boserup v. Malthus.

I’ve written about Norman Borlaug often. (Here’s but one example.) Back when I was younger, he was advocating for what we now call the Green Revolution. And, while Borlaug was promoting methods to increase agricultural yields world-wide, there was a competing voice, that of William Vogt.

Stop! In the name of truth!

This post was written long before The Donald elected to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. (That accord is officially entitled the United Nations Framework  Convention on Climate Change.  I italicized ‘framework’ to ensure y’all recognize this is but a suggestion to preserve the world in which we live- not a series of regulations governing our lives.)  Everything in the post below still applies. Except now, the warnings are probably more dire.

Lessons from Jonah.

Welcome to 5777. That’s the year, according to Jewish Tradition.  We’ve just finished Sukot, one of the 3 Festivals delineated in the Tora (the others are Pesach [Passover] and Shvuot [Pentecost]),  a time of joy and celebration. The past two holidays of this month were called Yamim Noraim, Days of Awe (Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipur)- in other words, they were holy days and not holidays.
