Colleges Inflate their Competitiveness

Most of you know that I am prehistoric- at least when it comes to current events.

When I applied to college, you needed to have your SAT’s (the ACT’s were barely a glimmer on the horizon) and 3 achievement tests in your arsenal before considering applying for college.  All those tests were offered by the College Board.

I didn’t forget about this…

Remember how embarrassed a few people were when the Panama Papers (pilfered from the law firm of Mossack Fonseca) were released?   When all those supersecret (and illegal) 214,488 offshore accounts were divulged?  Which is the reason someone car-bombed Daphne Caruana Galizia and murdered her.

Look who graduates?

I have railed against the destruction of our educational standards, since the athletes on teams rarely graduate- and those that do rarely graduate on time. The good thing is that at least the costs for four of their years (if they graduate) are covered. So, they won’t be accruing debt as they fail to achieve a proper education. (No, this does not mean they all don’t learn. Amazingly, this year’s MIT football team was without a loss- yet, and they are in the football championships.)

So, now we’ll screw up the colleges, too?

Most of you know that I have taught at various colleges and universities.  As such, I have taught a range of students.  As a matter of fact, one year, I filled in for a colleague, teaching a remedial math (I actually considered it arithmetic) class. It took a while, but I finally figured out how to get the kids psyched to learn the material…

UVA Progress?

Oops.  UVA is back in the news again.  A year later. (I last reported on the UVA shenanigans in August of last year.) For a few reasons.  It seems that Helen Dragas, while remaining on the board, will not be the Rector comes 30 June.  The first black Rector of the University, George K. Martin, will take her place on 1 July 2013.  Mr. Martin is an attorney with McGuireWoods, one of the most prominent of Virginia Law firms, where he manages the Richmond (and headquarters) office.  While he does practice law (corporate), he has been intimately involved in the administration of the firm, which will hopefully put him in great stead to take the reins of the UVa Board.

Sports on Campus?

No Gravatar

I have written about football on campus more than once.  (OK, I know some were closer to rants.)  Not only because of the infractions of the coaches and players. Not only because of the injuries that are rampant in this game.  (Only now are we beginning to talk about the plethora of TBI- traumatic brain injury- that accompany this sport). Not only because the graduation rate is below those for the rest of the school. But, mostly because of the drain on college finances.
