Over the decades, I’ve started a fair number of firms. I’m not going to count the ones I started before I was 18, since they were what I would call solopreneurial ventures. Businesses started to provide me the money I needed to live. I had no desire to create an enterprise, one that would hire employees and make a lasting impression upon the world.

This week has been designated as National Small Business Week. It would be optimum if the government agencies really tried to make it easier and better for small businesses to thrive in America. Instead of focusing their beneficence on megafirms. But, I digress.

The State of Business
Before we begin this discussion, I need to get something off my chest. I find it ridiculously presumptuous when someone starts a program and calls it the “First Annual” Anything. Really? First- ok. Annual- ok. First Annual? How about waiting until you show up again to come up with such a moniker. I’ve seen a slew of things that promised to be annual that never recurred.
Startup Costs?
So, you’ve decided. You ARE going to start your new business. You are on your way to hiring folks, offering your services and products. Exciting times.

So, here I was sitting in my favorite coffee shop (St. Elmo’s, of course), when one of my frequent visiting friends joined my table. He is considering a new venture, developing his business concept and plans, and was hoping I would help him make his dream a reality. What an honor!
Founder Syndrome
One of the biggest problems we see with nascent firms is the founder. When the firm was developed by one person. That person still sees himself (still is mostly a male, although we have two clients that made it herself) as the savior of the firm.
