I have railed against the destruction of our educational standards, since the athletes on teams rarely graduate- and those that do rarely graduate on time. The good thing is that at least the costs for four of their years (if they graduate) are covered. So, they won’t be accruing debt as they fail to achieve a proper education. (No, this does not mean they all don’t learn. Amazingly, this year’s MIT football team was without a loss- yet, and they are in the football championships.)

Teenage Employment
So, I was examining some publications from UVa recently and found one really interesting. Up until I realized it was really from the gin mill run by Rick Berman. (I‘ve written about Rick Berman and his Employment Policies Institute . But, most of the time, the articles (biased and conclusions developed BEFORE the research is completed) are written by a different author. As such, I kept reading- and now will share them with you. I will be editorializing at points- but, as opposed to Berman’s minions, I will make sure you know when, where, and why.)
A speech to remember
So, I told you that I attended my son’s graduation from the University of Michigan. (Of course, I did. Wild horses, a hurricane, or even a tornado would not have kept me from it.) And, I had the opportunity to hear one of the best graduation speeches ever. (I’m not inexperienced in this matter; a rough count is that I have heard- nay, endured- some 45 or so of these colloquys.)
Pomp and Circumstance.
What a weekend this will be. It feels like it was a second ago this young child was born. But, no- he is almost 22 now. The youngest of the brood. About to graduate from the University of Michigan. His first choice- no, his only choice- school.
How is college changing?
I was blessed with a visit from my eldest (daughter), her husband, and my grandson. It’s amazing to see the innocence, the insouciance, the love, and energy that this almost 4 year old has- and how he infects his parents with his essence. It made my home resonate.
Sports on Campus?
I have written about football on campus more than once. (OK, I know some were closer to rants.) Not only because of the infractions of the coaches and players. Not only because of the injuries that are rampant in this game. (Only now are we beginning to talk about the plethora of TBI- traumatic brain injury- that accompany this sport). Not only because the graduation rate is below those for the rest of the school. But, mostly because of the drain on college finances.
