Millennial Malaise

If you are younger than 40, some of this history may be news to you.

Many of my friends’ folks were children of the depression.  They grew up in an economy in ruins, one where it was not clear from where the next dollar would come or what would be on the table for supper.   That experience made many of these folks husband their cash, to preserve what they had for a rainy day.  And, these parents wanted their kids to learn skills that would carry them through economic downturns and prosperity.

Things are better- but it’s where you live that matters

We talked about the desecration of the American Dream yesterday.  As I said, before Reagan assumed the presidency, the 1%ers garnered 7% of after tax income in the US. 28 years later, that share had multiplied by 2.5X- so that the 1%ers collected 17% of the total income.

Is it safe yet?

Way back when I went to college (no, the dinosaurs were not roaming the earth then), a standard BS (that’s a Bachelor of Science, folks) in chemical engineering demanded the completion of 144 credits. Given that this is a technical program- and three hours labs only yielded 1 credit- plus there were  14 lab courses to be completed), it meant some 2580 hours of instruction. Part of that curriculum included two courses in aeronautical engineering.

Oligarchy Defined

Before I turn this series onto a focus on entrepreneurial ventures, which serve as the primary means the world has to exit the Great Recession, let’s review whether Occupy Wall Street is wrong in their annoyances.  Two factors will be examined- people and corporations (you know, those artificial citizens).

The Great Recession has eradicated middle class gains of the past 25 years- except for the top echelon.

Last Thursday, the Pew Research Center, released a report entitled “How the Great Recession Has Changed Life in America“.  According to this research, we have just undergone a major change (as one would suspect from its title) on our outlook on life.  One point not mentioned:  our children our going to have to find new methods of finding jobs- including working for firms in other countries (unless we finally band together as a nation and GROW our country).
