The “R” in R&D is falling short

I’ll bet there isn’t one of you who doesn’t know that I’m a techie. I’ve been devoted to science and technology- and FACTS- since I was a tyke. I knew I’d be a ChemE by the time I was 8 and was just as certain I’d effect major changes to the field of dialysis. I’ve been lucky enough to dabble in water treatment, water reuse, air treatment, microbial conversion of hazardous materials, pharmaceutical development, medical instrumentation, genetic manipulation, food production…. OK. You get the idea.

It’s time. No! It’s WAY past time!!!

Here, we go. It’s the heart of election season (only because we have made the primary season so long- and have it run right into the national election).   Only, this time, there’s enough talk (but still no action) that maybe we- that’s you and me, folks- can goad our do-nothing Congress into doing something to back up everyone’s polemics.

Cheaper than Iraq- and more important!

Infrastructure.   You know- the facilities, the structures, the systems that our country (and cities and counties) need to survive.   Our economy can’t function without an infrastructure- whether it’s roads, tunnels, bridges, electric grids, water systems, sewers, telecommunications- or any combination thereof.

At least someone is upgrading infrastructure

No Gravatar

I’ve written about our infrastructure failures.  In particular, how we have not upgraded our electrical transmission systems to preclude hacking or terrorist attacks.   There have been attacks (for example in California) that took the power station off line for a month.  That attack destroyed some 17 transformers and left parts of Silicon Valley in the dark.

Business knows we need infrastructure

Just because our government seemingly has no clue that infrastructure is critical, does not mean that business doesn’t. And, they are getting fed up with the inaction. Because, despite the hoopla from the last election, business knows that they don’t do it alone. Their profits rely upon telephones that work, roads that let trucks move, electric power transmission lines that can’t be hacked by terrorists- or just plain crazies.

Is XL the excellent choice?

No Gravatar

I’ve stayed out of the fray for a while now.  (Don’t cluck-cluck me; I really have!)  Because I wanted to see what each side would really use for their arguments; you see, there is nothing that is intrinsically safe, unsafe, right, or wrong with either side’s position.   No, it’s the execution that will make the difference.  About what am I talking?  Harvesting tar sands for oil refining and piping them thousands of miles.

Infrastructure problems are NOT going away

No Gravatar

I have been complaining for a long time that our governments- federal, state, and local- are doing us, the citizens,  a grand disservice.  They have basically shirked one of their primary duties- to maintain and upgrade our infrastructure.   To be honest, upgrading is so far from what they’ve done, I’m sure that most of us would be thrilled with their simply maintaining what we have.
