I know, you are not supposed to kick a guy who’s already down.
But, what happens if that guy (or, in these cases, agencies) still send tormenting notices to you all the time?

Well, that’s one way to get rid of a backlog.
The IRS, in its desire to reduce the amount of paperwork that it must process, did something extremely stupid. Well, maybe not extremely stupid, but pretty damned close.
So, the IRS is taking action to deal with its backlog. In my mind, the wrong action. And, yes, I know doing something is often better than doing nothing, but this something bothers me.
I always feel nervous when I have to amend a client’s taxes. After all, that means that the ability of the IRS to audit their report continues. Normally, there is a 6 year deadline for audits. Except that time frame starts from the due date of the return or the time the taxes are filed- whichever is later. (Yes, that means just because you filed in January of this year for 2021 does not mean that the audit period lapses on 31 January 2028; nope- it’s still [for this year, which the altered due date] 18 April 2028.
It’s been a long time since I took the Special Enrollment Examination to become certified as an Enrolled Agent. Luckily, I aced the exams and was able to become an Enrolled Agent.
So, yesterday, we spoke about TIGTA auditing the IRS. Which is a pretty fancy turnaround of events.
I am sure this will thrill many of you.
The IRS is getting audited.
Yes, you read that correctly. But, it’s not quite the turnaround many of you would want. This is more related to one of my frequent bitches about the IRS.
Boy, did I get a surprise the other day.
I needed a specific tax document from a few years ago, and I knew the IRS would have it. So, I went to the IRS site and was confronted with a new requirement.
I was having a discussion with a bunch of my tax professional compatriots and we were wondering how this year would go.
